Hello, I would like to buy my boyfriend a golf club for christmas. What are the best brands of clubs that I can get that are not TOO expencive? Also, I know that they have to be fitted for him- can he fit it after I buy it, or do i need to fit it at the time of purchase? Thanks for any help you can give me. I have never bought a golf club before. Thanks!!

That's awful nice of you. :) Not to rain on your parade, but I would think twice before buying a club for someone else. As you said, they should be fitted for best results. Also, many of us golf addicts are very brand loyal, so what you buy might not be what he really wanted.

How about a nice gift certificate for one of the bigger golf stores in your area? Or perhaps buy him some lessons, or tee times?

Just supporting what was said here, as it was very well said. The only thing I would add is that a player is only allowed 14 clubs, so it could be a question of replacing an existing club in his bag, then not only are you dealing with the fitting, the brand specific, but the loft and makeup of the club. It is a very nice thought, but it might be good to do it while he is present.

I understand what you guys are saying and that is why I am hesitant, but he has said several times that he would like a club as a gift. I've just never known how to go about doing it. Unfortunately, I can't remember what he said his favorite brand is but his current clubs are Burner Taylor Made Tour. He is a student so he doesn't make a lot of money, and has wanted new clubs for a while but can't afford them. I suppose I could ruin the surprize and just ask him, but I would like to save that as a last resort. Thanks for you replies though.

Buy him a set of Mizuno MP-60's

It will set you back around $900 but I guarantee he'll ask you to marry him the very next day! :D

OK Girlfriend - a serious answer.

Buying a club for someone is tough, but we've got something to work with. He's in school, probably young, flat bellied & fairly fit. He plays Taylor made.

Get him a Taylor Made R7 Quad, 9.5 or 10.5 degrees would probably be OK. It has adjustable weights so he can set it up to his swing, but be sure that the weight kit & wrench are included.

Shaft is important. If he is young & fit a stiff shaft is more than likely OK. Go to a Golf store in your area, a big one. This club ought to run about $300 - golf clubs are expensive. If that's too much $, wear a tight sweater, bat your eyes and plead. Used golf club prices are negotiable, I bet you can get a used one - don't forget the weight kit & headcover, they're important parts.

If he's got a golf buddy you know, talk to him & run this stuff by the friend. Mebbe take the buddy to the store with you.

Just to be clear...do you know if he wants new clubS? (as in a new SET of clubs) or does he just want A new club? If so, do you have any idea WHICH category of club he's looking for (ie driver/putter/wood/wedge/hybrid)?

Maybe those questions can help us give a better answer...
