Yesterday I played Bell Bay GC in Cape Breton NS, which hosts the Candian Men's Amateur Championship next week. The course was in immaculate condition (it always is) and the rough was DEEP. If you missed the fairway, there was a good chance you would not find your ball. I lost 3 tee balls in the rough that was maybe 5 yards off the fairway, I've never seen anything like it. My guess was that the rough was about 6-8 inches.
It was interesting around the greens having to take big swings with a 60 degree to get the ball to come out and hopefully get to within 6-10 feet, chipping was not an option, unless you were on the collar, in which case it was so close and fast I putted most of the time. The starter told us we'd have some "interesting" shots around the greens, and he was right... it was a lot of fun
We talked to a maintenance guy who said they weren't doing any more mowing in the rough for the next week - (the championship starts on the 12th) There had better be spotters in every fairway, or those boys will need to hit provisionals if they miss the fairway!!
