As most of you know I am in the market for new clubs and went and was fitted for some Pince G2s at Edwin Watts at 4 deg upright. I have since went to another golf shop and was fitted for mizuno clubs and was only 2 deg upright. I was told that Ping uses different club fitting method and that is why it is 2 deg off. Do I need to get a 3rd opinion, do different manufacturers actually use different fitting methods, or am I just getting lip service to get a sale.

Sounds it. I was fitted with my MacGregors using the ping cart. So something smells here, I'll warrant.

It may be that there are no set standards for lie angle. One company's standard may be another's 2 degree upright, so the 4* up may match Mizuno's 2* up. 3rd opinion may not hurt, but make sure to get fitted with the same clubs each time.

Just to stir things up, Mizunos are know for being a little flat. At 6', it was recommended that mine be bent 2* upright, so that's a very big difference between the first fitting and the second.

Yep. They are made in Asia, and are (at least used to be?) also shorter, which in effect makes them more upright. Oh, how the water clouds...

Quick question about fitting. I'm looking to get new irons soon, I'm 6' and about 170lbs. Not a big guy by any means. Now, being kind of tall, should I get my clubs fitted or do you guys think off-the-shelf clubs will suffice?

6' is probably off the rack most of time but there are still variables. I'm 6' also but have short legs and long arms. It's a good idea to get fit if you want to be sure.

That depends on both school of thought and your plans/current swing. If you are a beginner with a swing that will change dramatically as you improve, I say get static fitted for your basic measurements and get dynamic fitted when your swing is closer to optimal. Note that more than just height goes into a static fitting. I am around 6', but have longer arms than average, so my static fitting is different than average height, average arms. The static fitting will get you close enough, and once the swing comes around a dynamic fitting will get you perfect. I feel that if you get a dynamic fitting on a drastically "wrong" swing, the dynamic fitting will jst have to be redone as you improve.

Any other thoughts guys???

My swing may change slightly, but it's not going to be drastic. I've only been playing a year, but my swing is good. I don't have an official handicap but if I did it would most likely be in the 18-20 range. I have a solid swing.

I'm also 6'0" and just under 170 pounds. There's a lot of variance in both wrist-to-floor measurement and in how far away from the ball guys with our height like to stand. I recommend custom fitting; have seen postings very recently from guys with our height that ranged from 33" wtf to 38" wtf. It would be next to impossible for guys at the extreme ends of that measurement to effectively play with each other's clubs--or with off the rack clubs.

Mmmmmmmmmm could be. But maybe not. Tom Watson said yesterday in an interview on TGC that he really didn't learn how to swing the golf club until 1990. That's a scary statement. I might leave a bit of wiggle room. ;)

FWIW, I'm 6' and 165. My clubs are +2* and used to be +1/2", though they are now standard length.

And to JC's point, I'm 35" wrist to floor.

I saw that too Farq. Tom is at least honest, LOL.

Joe, FWIW, I played to a 12 last year and played to 2* upright. I felt like I had a great swing that would change little. Shortened story, I am in need of flattening my irons as we speak due to a swing change that is lowering my score. Sometimes our fundamentals aren't as good as we envision, and sometimes we just top out with our current swing and need to change. Either way, good luck.

Joe:

If you can afford it - I would definitely go with custom-fit clubs.

I am Mr. Average in clothing etc. If there is a big sale and I don't hit it early - all my stuff will be gone since I wear such common sizes. XL shirts, 10.5 shoes etc. So if anybody could get 'off the rack' clubs - it might be me.

I am 1 degree upright in my clubs and when I had them custom-fit - it made a big difference immediately.

I have used these irons for ten years so - over time - the extra $$ have been worth it to me...

As opposed to....?

I'm pretty certain that 95% plus of all iron heads are founded in Asia, in one country or another.

I can't say for Ping tho. Are they made in USA? I could have sworn they were "assembled in the USA" which leads me to believe they are made overseas.

Who's clubs are made in the USA? Hogan?....I'm entirely unsure...

Joe,
Go to your local pro shop and get measured!! It is free and you might as well know what fit you are. They may tell you that you are a standard fit (or close to it) and you can just buy off of the shelf, and if they tell you that your measurements are too far off of normal you will know not to buy off of the shelf and you can then look at custom fitted clubs.
