I have a friend here in Birmingham AL USA who is from Cornwall (Falmouth). He has dual citizenship and travels back to see the parents at least once a year....

Cornwall is a very beautiful part of the country with some wonderful history and I would dearly love to spend some time there, but sadly the logistics for me at the moment make it impractical. A golf friend from Edinburgh goes there each year and has membership at a Jack Nicklaus course - I forget the name, but I'll check and post details...

My friend Neil is a really funny guy. As you can imagine, he is totally plugged into the Premier League. He has satellite TV and gets all the games. They can now even be heard on satellite radio here too.

He has lived here for 20 years and is a ton of fun to party with. We had a Mexican food party a year ago and he mixed up homemade Margaretas with fresh squeezed limes. We got bombed and he explained the process of Promotion and Relegation in the UK football system. I never understood it and think it is really cool. There is nothing like that over here, where you can move up and down to/from the 'minor leagues'....

B, kinda sounds like the NHL...and baseball for that matter (I think..?). In the NHL, all the teams have "farm teams" and will often bring players up due to scratches and/or slumps.

The promotion/relegation thing works something like this...

In England, there are 92 league clubs split between several leagues/divisions.

The different teams are not connected to each other, they are all independent in their own right.

The top division is the Premiership - teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. There are 20 teams in the Premiership. If you finish in the bottom 3 or 4 (i forget..) you get relegated to the league immediately below. And those at the top of that league take your place.

That process goes on all the way down the leagues.

There are a few extra details, but those are the basics. A similar system works in just about every other country in terms of their football league set-up.

That about covers it, but as you would expect it gets a bit more complicated (with the relatively recent introduction of Play-offs). It adds to the spice of it. Teams battle to survive in the Premiership, while teams in the lower divisions fight it out to see who gets promoted. Obviously gate receipts, TV rights and merchandising are hugely lucurative incentives so demotion is often disasterous in terms of financial losses, while promotion leads to opportunities to build new teams, stadia etc. A lot of the teams are now PLCs although very few of them actually make any money. Most are run by ex-footballers who are not great businessmen!

It is a mark of quality that several teams in the Premiership have not faced demotion for a few decades, but the teams languishing in the lower echelons of the table have to slug it out to avoid the drop. It is often sad to see teams go down (eg Leeds) and it is a sad reflection that often money (financial backing) will dicate how well the team does, due to the players availbale at a price. You often see a team get promoted only to get demoted at the end of the season. However look at mighty Wigan at the moment!

I think it is a good healthy system though as it keeps fans at both ends of the table on the edge of their seats right up until the last kick of the ball of the last match of the season. The teams at the top battle it out to qualify for a range of European tournamants (again with financial incentives).

Yes this is the way Neil described it to me. While it makes perfect sense that money has much to do with it - in terms of the ability to "buy the best talent" - I still really like the concept. It provides gripping drama...

I am sure that when city the size of Leeds has its club relegated - it is much like a funeral...
