DIY re-gripping

I need some new grips on the 731s and the Golf Pride kits have caught my eye.

Anyone used these before? Can a complete idiot successfully put a set of grips on with everything in the kit?

EDIT: Obligatory search done after posting. Answers found. I'll get the order down one of these days.

God, it's so easy a monkey could do it.

Monkeys probably do, do it for OEM's in China. ;)

Cut the old grip off.

Remove old grip tape and residue with acetone.

(in case you were wondering, you'l need new grip tape for the next step. ;) )

I like my tape to be the same length as the grip, more or less. I apply the tape over the shaft, leaving the tape long on the butt end so I can wrap it over the top of the shaft. If you use 3/4 inch tape do this on 2 sides of the shaft.

I also have a spray bottle filled with grip solvent which I spray liberally on the tape and inside the new grip.....then slide the new grip on and align it. Let it dry and your done.

Thanks, Sling.

The afforementioned kits come with tape and solvent and a nifty rubber clamp to hold the shaft in bench vise (can I do it without?). Golf Pride Tour Velvets incoming.

No, you need the rubber thingy so you don't crush or otherwise damage the shaft.

As Slingblade stated, it's pretty easy to re-grip your own clubs. If you have graphite shafts, you do have to be carefull not to cut into the shaft when you cut off the old grip. I find the 2 inch wide tape to be easier to use, less hassle. And you can also pour the solvent into the grip in then pour it over the tape, that gets the inside of the grip and the tape nice and wet. You can plug the small hole in the end of the grip with a golf tee before you fill it, and catch the run off in an aluminum pan so you can re-use it for the next club. Golfsmith has everything you need and a guide on how to do it. Give it a try, it's easy.

You don't even need a vice really... It will help certainly, but I don't vice my clubs when applying grips and most of them even came out straight ;)

All joking aside, if you don't have a vice or a workshop, I wouldn't waste any money buying one.

Like VtDivot, I've done a few in the past without a vice at all. It was a little difficult, but still easily "do-able". I would absolutely agree with SLing and Don about the rubber clamp piece for the vice. Nothing like putting a new grip on a shaft you just crushed!!

I have a shop and got the gripper- but I found it easier to push on with head on the grass in the yard!
I like to plug the hole with my finger then use the hole to wet the tape.... I also found lighter fluid to work better- walmart has it cheap- note don't smoke though....

wish I wore my grips out this year

I finally got around to tackling this project on Sunday. It was as easy as you guys said. The vise came in handy, but I can see it wouldn't be much harder without.

Some things I learned
- Getting old tape off the shaft sucks
- You can never be too liberal with the grip solvent
- A monkey can re-grip clubs

And now that you've done it, we can put that theory to bed....lol.

Cheers, and nicely done.
