This came up at Easter dinner, strangely enough. I never really thought about it, but do the PGA tour players have to pay entry fees to play in the various tournaments? I understand that some players are exempt and what not, but what about the others? Is that where the purse comes from?

I just assumed they wouldn't be paying to enter and that they just got to play because...y'know, they're on the tour.

I think they need to pay an entry fee, unless you're exempt, like winning majors and all. Maybe that's why there's so many players who need sponsors to play.
Also seen this in a video golf game where you need to pay an entry fee (Was it Tiger Woods or Links??).

I never really thought about it either. Though I'm sure they don't, pay to enter I think have have to pay to qualify. Exempt means you don't need to qaulify. So any cash thyed have to pay would be for monday qualifiying. I dont kow where the cash goes but if it goes to prize money, itd be pretty expensive to qualify. It more likely goes to the tour and the tournament to pay for stuff at the event. like officials and things.

I'm pretty sure you have to pay a entry fee fore quailfying and for the actual event even if you are excempt for the event. And I think Loop is kind offf on the right trail thats why crap players need sponsors. It is tiger woods they need to pay entry fees.

Tour player do pay $100 per event whether you are exempt or not on the pga tour. The tight lies and others are more expensive.

This is a cut and paste from where I got my original answer. It's from golfonline but who knows.

Must PGA Tour players pay an entry fee to play in all tournaments?

PGA Tour members do not have to pay an entry fees to play a PGA Tournament. Nonmembers pay an entry fee of $400. As for the majors, The Masters is by invitation only. There is no entry fee for the pga championship. For U.S. Open qualifying, players pay a entry fee of $125. The entry fee for the British Open is 100 pounds ($162 American).

I asked Mark Brooks. He was in picking up a set and I had never thought about it so I ask him. It is automatically taken from his bank account for each tournement he plays in.

Interesting. $100 from 120 or whatever players = $12,000. I'm guessing that's not where the purse comes from.

That dosen't cover the trash pick up. The sponsors and TV contract are what pay for the tourneys.
