I love this time of the year. Course is beautiful, nice and brisk in the morning to wake you up, then warms up as the day goes on, course to ourselves. Only downside is it is not long before you can't find your ball in the leaves as it is almost impossible to keep up with, then knowing the season will start to wind down.

Although if I were to play from our 4th tee to the 5th green it would be about 1 1/2 miles, I would have to play over about 4 roads and 30-40 houses.

Between the 16th tee and 17th green would be about 2 miles through heavy woods, I would probably need a tent. :)

Had a great time on the course today. Played Alvamar in Lawrence KS. It was a 4-man scramble for work and despite my short length off the tee I managed to help our team quite a bit. I drained two long birdie putts and jarred an 80 yd. wedge on a par 5 for eagle. :D Hit it about 3 feet past the hole and backed it up into the cup. As soon as I hit it I knew it was all over the pin.

Great weather too. Cool this morning then got up to the mid 70's this afternoon with just a light breeze. Not too many of these days left I'm afraid.

Love the weather, but the light can play tricks with my eyes. Particularly that sort of dappled light in the afternoon. Leaves or no, I'm perfectly capable of losing my ball on the fairway. And NOT because I'm unused to hitting it there!

Played Alvamar for the first time last time we were out there (the public course). We have old friends that could get us on the private course but were busy that week. Which did you play???

Also MGP, if you have not already played it, I would highly recommend Colbert Hills if you ever make it to Manhattan.

BTW, what courses would you recommend around Olathe or KC. I know there are a few, price is likely not a big issue since they are likely cheaper than our cheaper courses.

We didn't start to golf till we moved out here, so Alvamar, Colbert Hills and Herington are the only courses we have played. I played Ft. Leavenworth back in the late 70's but knew nothing about golf at the time as I was about 14.

Played the public side. I love playing Alvamar any chance I get because their greens are always excellent. Huge but fast and true.

Hmmm... good courses around here? Sycamore Ridge in Spring Hill, Prairie Highlands in Olathe, Ironhorse in Leawood are all top-notch public courses. Deer Creek in Overland Park is good too. None of them are terribly expensive, I think Prairie Highlands is the most expensive at about $75. The others are somewhat less.

There are some other decent public courses too. You might like Tomahawk Hills in Shawnee. YG and I have played there quite a bit together. Old school course built in the 20's. Small greens and lots of elevation change.

If you do get to this area again, let me know. I can get you out as a guest on Shawnee Golf and Country Club as I'm a member there now. I think you might like it, it's built on hilly tree lined ravines with a pretty major creek channel running through about half the course. The 17th there is one of the harder par 4's I've played in a long time -- hard dogleg right through the trees and about a 20 yd. wide fairway landing area. Second shot uphill almost 200 yards to a three tiered green that's brutally fast. I've only parred the hole once... many "others"

They also have a newer 9 that's more parkland style and runs through a housing subdivision. It reminds me of Alvamar actually.

Thanks for the info.

Hard to say the next time we will be out during Golf season. We usually go out every year to every other year, but many times during the winter months. I kinda leave that up to my wife since her family lives out there. Will definitely keep that in mind. I know if we go in the warmer months, we will definitely be playing a few rounds, and we usually fly into KC, stay with my wifes brother around Platte City, then stay in Lawrence or go thru via 10. Had heard there were some good courses between Olathe and KC.

I love fall golf too. I much prefer cool temps to hot, humid weather.
The only thing that sucks is all the leaves. They make it difficult to find your ball (even on the fairway) and you have to clear a path for your shot on the green.
Im thankful for every round I get to play though, because I know that my days of playing golf this year are coming to an end.
Im not sure when the courses around here close down for the season, but I plan on playing until they shut it down for the winter. I dont care if Im out there in a jacket, stocking cap and gloves with the while howling and snow falling, I'll still be out there playing.

I like fall golf, but course conditions can be a bit iffy. Here in Augusta, most courses are overseeding the tee boxes and/or the greens with rye about now.

Yesterday, the goat track we played was seeding and watering the tee boxes, so all the tees were moved up to the ladies tee, and they didn't tell us when I called. :( Bad.

So, I decided to tee off with 3 wood only, excpet driver on par 5s. :) Hit some of my best shots, too.

I actually drove a 278 par 4 with the 3 wood and made the eagle putt. :D Now I know how JB Holmes and Bubba Watson must feel when they stand on every par 4 tee box: Should I go for the green or just bunt one out there?

I must admit that drive was downhill and got a real favorable kick.
