2 par

I have asked to be put off 2 though, having spent some time talking to the pro.I don't live alone, but golf is my only hobby and I work shifts, which helps,I can get to the range for 4.30 everyday.

I handed in 3 par cards, taking out the worst and best.

Process is that you hand in your 3 lowest scores if you don't already have a handicap at all. If it comes out as Category 1 then you'll prolly be asked to "justify" it in writing. If you already have a handicap then you cannot hand in cards to reduce it to Category 1, or to reduce it if you are already Category 1. Cat I handicaps can only be reduced by competition play.

If your club is accepting cards and/or you and your pro are deciding your handicap then that isn't to EGU rules and regs.

You're obviously a keen and excellent golfer but for better or worse the EGU regs do not allow you to pick and choose your handicap, especially if its under 5.5.

:ukflag: I was just attracted to this smilie on the right hand side of the screen, it has no purpose or relevance to the tread.

You have made assumptions based on scant info, apologies.(although I don't think you noticed the thread title, the EGU have authorised my handicap, not the club). However,I have been playing society golf this year due to work and home commitments,no comps, with the intention of playing a full year in comps next year.I asked the pro what to do and he decided to send to the EGU the last 3 cards. They simply phoned him and suggested scratch, but as this is an unusual set of circumstances, they would accept 0,1, or 2.

The EGU maintain handicaps at that level,as you rightly say, (actually, its under 2 they look after)but they were happy to accept my opinion I need 2 to have a chance next year.Everything has been handled via the EGU.

There is a world of difference relaxing in a company society, and playing a full season in comps off the tips,I did in 20 years ago so I'm aware of the difference, hence why I want the higher handicap. The EGU do therefore let you choose your handicap in certain circumstances.Bear in mind my lowest scores are from a 6000 yarder near where I work,my own course is 7100 off the tips.

Thats sweet dude, not too many peoples first handicap is scratch.

Over here with the gui (golfing union of ireland) system, they can not give out category 1 handicaps to players who have never had a handicap so you must start at 6.

Is the rule completely different over in England?

No idea, but yes you can go straight in at scratch, although I have played before,18 years ago to be exact,so I am not a beginner.

18 Years is quite a long time, my brothers friend only played for a year and got a 4 handicap :hunter:

So in the UK - humans have a big role in determining handicaps of players? Is there a meaningful bit of subjectivity in this? Meaning, if somebody in a position of power is biased for or against you - it can have a significant difference in your handicap?

Over here it is very simple - they take your ten lowest of your most recent 20 scores and mathematically computer your handicap relative to the slope and rating of the course. Virtually all U.S. courses are on the GHIN system which is based in New Jersey and the scores are determined through a computer program. There is no human factor involved...

Looks like it,no doubt the US system is a better and fairer system. However, the human in this case had to choose between 0-2,not any handicap, they couldn't have said 10.
