Golf is confusing...so friggin confusing. I was in the poconos last week and play Split rock Country Club..a course on the side of a mountain...and it beats you up. Shot 87...and I am a 4 handicap. I played a week earlier and shot an 81 at a local course..so I am ready to throw in the towel..my game is going south.

I tee it up at tattersall in West Chester, PA the other day and fire a 1 under, 71. I hit 15 of 18 greens and missed 4 birdie putts all under 10 feet. I hit every fairway. The more I think about it..that 71 is not looking too good with the way I played.

What other sport can do this to a man...I dont know if I can recover if I go out tomorrow and shoot an 85.

Lemme get this straight. You have the proven ability to shoot sub-par rounds and you think you've got a problem?

Excuse me, I'm just off to slit my wrists...

Which is why I am so frustrated because I also have the ability to go out and shoot 85. It's like a roller coaster every time I tee it up.....its why I have stopped playing competitive golf.

Ok, but the issue is why you are carding these high scores. What has the recent pattern been? wild drives? 40 putts a round? mentally not in it? I bet you can pinpoint at least an area. Take a week off and try to "range" it out. A little issue can sometimes lead to a big issue - remember some guy named dave duvall?

I'm a crap golfer, won't deny it. But i'm trying to identify the specific crapness with which I am afflicted.

So, for the first time ever - and based on ideas from posters here - I've started analyzing my rounds to see where the problem lies.

To give you an idea, i'm currently shooting in the 90-95 range, about 10 shots per round worse than a year or so ago. And fecked if I know why.

Well, by looking at my rounds, I see I average about 32 putts per round. I don't know how that compares to others here, but I think that's ok. And by implication I reckon my short iron play is ok. It's Greens in Regulation. I keep missing the buggers.

So, on the rare occasions I get to the range, thats where I concentrate my efforts - mid-long irons, trying to get them straighter and learning my yardage. And slowly it's paying dividends.

In fact, by mid-September, I hope to have improved enough to give the Irish lads a good pasting in their own backyard.

I forget how to swing...and what I mean is..I lose the feeling. When I was a teenager, I just played..did not think about swing plane, clubface position, spine angle, etc..when I got in the biz, I learned all this stuff and my swing became too mechanical..I was thinking too much...I almost feel I know too much now.

When I am on the range, I can find the feeling due to repeated swings...the problem is when I am on the course......I just need to go out and play for fun and not worry about score.
