Haney vs Pelz - School Feedback Requested

I've got the opportunity this fall to spend a little on some instruction. I've only been playing this year and usually score a bit over 100 with a rare score below 100, in other words I think I have the basics down, but definitely need some pro instruction to consistantly get (and stay) below 100.

So, since I live in Dallas I have a lot of training opportunities around here but have more or less settled on two. For pretty much the same cost I can attend a full day course at either the Hank Haney Golf Ranch (rumor is that he actually knows Tiger Woods, neat!) or a full day Scoring Clinic from Dave Pelz (he's some sort of tech-geek, not sure how much he knows about golf).

Who on the board has attended which one and who can give some feedback on these two? Thanks in advance!

I haven't been to either school, but for they cost I'll bet you could get a series of one on one lessons with a good pro. To each his own, but that's what I'd do.

I've thought about that too Dave. Either school will be about $400 or so, yeah that's a fair chunk of change. But I really feel that I'm at a point where I don't need new clubs, for the most part my gear is in good enough shape, so what do I do? I could go play $400 worth of golf, but would I just be re-inforcing bad habits? Most likely. I think pro lessons are the way to go.

Pelz is a short game guru. I do not like the haney teaching so I would choose pelz.

I think that DaveE is right, for $400, you can probably get about 8 or 10 one on one lessons with a good pro at a reputable local instruction facility (as opposed to a one day jaunt where you're liable to forget most of what you learned). To find out which ones are reputable, ask around at your local golf shops, courses, etc.

As a choice between the two, I've obviously never been to either, but Haney is Tiger's coach now and Pelz may know a thing or two about golf, considering he's Phil's short game coach. So Pelz will teach you some of what you can read in the Pelz Short Game Bible and Haney will teach you...I dunno, something, but nothing a good pro couldn't teach you. Spend $20 on the Pelz book and the rest on lessons.

See my PM

pls ignore my sarcastic remarks ;)

FYI - just because you go to these guys schools doesn't mean you will see them. More than likely you will see some other pro, who might teach the Pelz or Haney philosophy or his own.

I would agree with DaveE.

Those one day schools are geared more for sharpening skills rather than learning skills. Spending the money for some one on one with a local pro for a series of lessons will give you time for the instruction to absoarb. As you learn new things, you can go to the range a few times before your next lesson and practice what you have learned and build it in to your routine before you learn something new.

My wife is just takinig up the game, and that is what we are going to do for her. A series of lessons with a local pro then reinforcement on the range and course before the next lesson.

Just my 2 cents.

Right, I was never for a second thinking I would be taught by these guys. Haney's school even has several grades of instructor with (of course) increasing grades of cost the higher you go in the foodchain.

And yeah, now that I've thought about it I think that I'm going to get some 1:1 training at a local course. I think I might do 1 hour per Saturday for 5-6 weeks, we'll see. I even know which course I plan on using. A really nice local country club that has it's own school, very nice, and since I know the club staff I should be able to get a decent price.

Thanks so much for the feedback (and reality check!) on this guys. Greatly appreciated!

Thanks B, and BD, I think our other speciality is language lessons from those wonky European "Island folk."

I'm sure you will enjoy both, but how much time will you get with haney himself? Will he just do an opening speech and bugger off? I would check and see how long you get with the main men first
