Hardest club to master, in your opinion...

I was thinking today which club really is the hardest to master.

There's been many a struggle with the driver.

Fairway woods can be night and day.

Ever started pushing all your short irons for no reason?

The putter......that bastard club.

Lob wedge? Looks easier than it is.

Long irons are the devil's clubs.

Anyone have any opinions?

hmmm, very good thread rock, you have good points for all of the clubs, for me i struggled with drivers for a long time, but now find it fairly easy, fairway woods off the deck were never a problem for me, long irons well, they were hard and will probably become hard again when i start hitting blades, i might either use the 3 iron or keep the 7 wood. it took lots and lots of practice to master the lob wedge but now i'm just a machine with it, for me it'd have to be the putter, what seems the most simple thing isn't to me, its a real mental thing i suppose, this winter, i'll work my butt off to get it better, so, strike one down for the putter

For me, the hardest club to hit is the one that you have no confidence with. If you are having trouble with a club and keep bringing it up, you're probably going to continue to struggle with it.

I try to keep my mind positive when I approach a shot that i have hit poorly earlier in the round. Like the driver. I try and visualize a perfect shot. More often than not, it works.

I also try and be realistic. I mean, the average guy is going to sink 1 out of every 10 putts over 15 feet. That only makes sense. But if you have a good mindframe and be realistic at the same time, it really works wonders.

How many times have you missed a short putt, only to miss the one coming back? Happens alot, doesn't it. You have to approach each putt as a seperate event, don't link positives or negatives together. It just doesn't work.

Although my driver and putter can be hot and cold (and I hate my putter so!), I have always struggled with the 3 wood off the deck to the point where I just won't use it at all.

I can only say that my most reliable club is my bullseye putter. At least I can count on it, since the putting stroke has become quite easy for me (it's technically not difficult if you know what I mean). For everything else, there's Mastercard (or Visa).

The putter is all about frame of mind as the Rock points out. Sometimes when I'm putting my "train of thought" is still boarding at the station.

I'm not a "bad" putter. It just that it lets me down so many times. I average about 32/33 putts per round. If I got that to 29/30, that's 3 shots off my score and h/c index. I'm talking about those 6-10 footers!! I don't make enough of them.

But when I go hot with the flatstick, the rest of my game tends to suck. Only very rarely does it all come together.

Just for the record, long irons (1,2,3,4) can be a bastard and 3 woods off very tight lies can prove a challenge to get any height on them.

Grazo,

That's so funny how that works. Personally, i love hitting the 3 wood off the deck. It allows me to work it left or right, whereas the rough sometimes dictates the shot.

What fairway woods are you using? I use Hawkeye Pros myself, which doesn't mean anything really, but sometimes equipment can dictate both confidence and execution.

Funny how one man's struggles are another man's pleasure. :)

It is quite funny. I have zero confidence with a wood off the deck, but give me a long iron and I'm golden. Who said this game was mental? :)

No doubt about it. I play with a high handicapper from time to time that cannot hit any woods at all. So he is out there teeing off with a 3 iron and he gets a solid 200 yards out of it.

(I hate 3 irons. At my very very best, could hit it decent about 50% of the time. At the same time, I can hit a decent drive (in the fairway) about 60-65% of the time and get about 250-275 out of it if I hit it well.)

So we go into the pro shop at the turn and I say, "let's get one of these hybrids for you to try out on the back".. We grab a demo club and play the backside.

He can't hit it to save his life. He can hit a very good 3 iron but not a hybrid.

Don't ask me to figure out this game. Impossible.

3 wood

blows! 5w fine, 7w fine, but 3w stinks. for crying out loud my driver is even more consistent off the tee!

don't get me wrong, before i got my hybrids the 3 and 4 irons would have won by a landslide! then again, before my lesson anything that was longer than my 7 iron (except the 5w) would have tied. :(
