What's up. I have a question or need big help. I have been golfing for years now and shoot in the low 80's to high 70's. The problem is I am all upper body. I am 6'3'' at 275lbs and wack it about 275 to 300 yards. I know my game could be better as I do hit bad shots. The problem is when I step up and take that practice swing,I look like a pro. As soon as I get in the box to hit, I am all upper body. I hit good the way I am now but when I get the weight shifting,I hit the ball first then dig the grass and the ball goes alot farther and straighter. How can I make the same swing in the box that I do when taking a practice swing. I have tried and tried but just can't do it. Great site and nice to meet all of you.

Welcome Harley :)

Actually the practice swing isn't really a good swing, but more of a tension free swing, without hitting anything or having a target in mind.
If your swing on the tee box doesn't look like your "pro" practice swing, it's because of tension and also self doubt about your swing.
Try these tips and see if they works:
1. When on the tee box, only think of weight shifting.
2. Don't care about the result of your swing, or where the ball might go.
3. Do your practice swing by hitting a tee (without the ball on it).

Yeah, make a good swing and let the ball get in the way. The practice range is a good place to practice that. You should tense up since a bad shot won't affect your score.

i agree with whatn loop and bent have to say.generaly my practice swings look pretty good.

when i get over the ball i just think make solid contact and let it go where it goes.plus with tension free swings you will get more distance because your muscle arent fighting the swing.

Thanks for the help and will try it all out Monday morning. I go golfing every Monday. I was in the back yard swinging and it feels great but I know when I get in the box, looking at a white ball, all upper body is back. I will try. Thanks again for the help.

I, too, have that problem at times......it's all about tension and thinking too much once you step up to the ball. Take a couple good practice swings (close to the ball and aligned correctly), step up and repeat the swing without stopping to think about much else. This also works great w/ chipping!
