SO I started about a month ago hitting my 7iron and up (except my woods) to the left.

I would not say it is a hook but more like a pull....starts straight and fades well left, not severe like a hook.

Any thoughts? I feel like maybe I am swinging over the top or releasing too soon....any drills or thoughts on how to work on those things.

I do try and bring the club back low and with a good tempo through impact, when I do that, i mean really focus on that I am 100% perfect on my shots. It's when I am not concentrating or tired I pull it.

I read in Golf Digest about hinging your hands, but I just can't picture how to do this the right way. Anywho, let me know what you all think!

fades way left is not quite the right expression, but I get the point

If it starts straight, then the swing path is probably ok, but the club face is closed at impact, narrow it down from there, start with grip.

Think of how a waiter carries a serving tray up over his shoulder. that's the position you want your right wrist in at the top of your back swing. As far as when to hinge or cock your wrist, that varies from instructor to instructor. Just starting out it might not be a bad idea to cock/hinge them as soon as you begin your takeaway, at least until you get the feel for it. And don't worry about releasing the wrist cock, as you swing the bring the club head down, it's weight and the momentum of your swing will uncock them automatically. Infact, you may want to try and hold it as long as you can. The longer you can maintain the wrist cock, the more lag you generate, which equates to a faster swing speed.

Hope this helps.

Oh man....the waiter thing totally helps...I read a Golf Digest about this whole hinge thing and just couldn't figure it out. Drug my wife out to the backyard and had her watch what I normally do...which instead of hinge, I just take the club back way to the inside....then I told her to watch for the "waiter position" and see where my swing path went and BAM! way better...can't wait to check it out on the range! I then had her watch a slow version of both swings...the non waiter swing had a inside take away and a over-correcting release...thus the pulled/hooked shots and close club face....the waiter swing, although it felt weird had a squared club face.

But I should be careful not to flip at the ball right? and not to come back to steep...... then I will just keep hooking....

Thanks again!

Glad it's working for you! :thumbs up: Like i said, try and hold the hinge as long as you can to create as much lag as possible. That will also make certain you don't flip your wrist.

So I am still hitting things left... i think the hinge is working....sometimes I over do it and I get all funky.....not what else can it be? What should my grip look like...neutral or weak? a strong grip goes right, right?

What do you guys think?

A strong grip(rotate left hand clockwise on the grip) usually helps shut the clubface at impact, which creates a hook or draw(to the left) ball flight, a week grip(rotate left hand counter-clockwise) will keep the face more open at impact creating a slice or fade(to the right) ball flight
