I have the shanks..........hitting everything right off of the hosel. I have never had this problem before. My normal shot is a slight fade to straight with the occasional pull but nothing like this. I can not even hit one good iron shot for the life of me. I have had this problem for about a month now and need to fix it before I go away for my yearly golf trip with the guys. I actually had the round of my life and the next time I picked up the clubs it was shanks galore. So frustrating going from and 83 which is my best ever to not even being able to hit a golf ball at all. Any pointers woudl be great!

Shanks,

1). Lose the name - it won't help you! :)

Just kidding... You may be coming over the top, which I've been known to do from time to time. It's not that uncommon to strike the ball at the hosel - sending it due-right. Even if you've an othewise nice swing (good tempo, follow through), if you come over the top slightly, 'other' moves are needed to strike the ball center-face.

A local pro had me do a simple drill to help. He'd put a ball just slightly further out than the ball I was addressing - and about 8" behind: Below, pretend the red D and the little 'o' is the club/ball at address, and the big 'O' is the dummy ball you're not supposed to strike

You'll find it difficult to not strike the outside-rear ball if you are coming over the top. I had some trouble at first, but once I got it I was able to do it even when he placed the ball closer to the address ball and closer to directly behind it. It really helped me get the feeling of swinging from the inside. Hey, it's worth a try.. Nothing worse than the 'shanks'!

I'm sure you'll get some great advise for drills/tips from the knowledgeable folks here..

Regards,
Jim

Watch the "inside" of the ball and less body movement.

Yeah I am gonna try this as well. I think I might actually be getting to stiff during my downswing and not clearing my hips enough either. It is also to the point where I am thinking way too much too......just swing you big dummy, right?

Shift your weight back toward your heels just a bit. Keep going until you hit the face.

Ooh! ooh! I know! Pick me!

When practising address the ball with your right foot about stepped back about one foot to encourage a good plane into the striking area. Even if this doesn't give you the absolute perfect swing plane forever, the unusual positioning will hopefully distract you slightly from the shank which is no doubt even occupying your dreams after a month!

The problem is obvious: instead of looking at the ball, you're looking at that girl's ass. I'd have the shanks, too, with that distraction.
