Ho help required

A friend of mine is going to take up golf. I've taken him to play at the par 3 pitch and putt course at my club and he did quite well. He has decent eye/hand co-ordination and plays other sports so I think he will pick it up quite quickly. I plan to help him out there for a bit before we hit the range and then I'll pass him over to the pro to get him going in the right direction.

I have been looking around for a suitable starter set of irons for him but am uninspired - I haven't seen anything that I really think looks like a killer deal. Best I found was a hal decent set of Maxfli Reds and set of MacGregor Tourneys with an MD Golf driver and Pro Series (no other detail) putter thrown in for £75.

Can anyone spare a few minutes finding a good starter set? I'd be really grateful if you could and I know we have a Ho community second to none on this forum. UK sites would be better but if the postage isn't too bad then US EBay/Global golf is a goer.

I was thinking that a fair condition set of forgiving irons 5-PW would be right to kick off with but obviously 3-PW sets that are a good price would be fine, he doesn't have to carry the 3 and 4 and even the 5 for a while yet.

How much has he got to spend? Personally I'd talk him into spending a couple of ton and get decent stuff that will last at least a few seasons.

I'd suggest picking a set of MacGregor M565 or M454's up with rifle 4.5's or 5.0s. Direct golf are selling them for £149.00. If he gets the M565's they would be great from starting to single figures so wouldn't need replacing any time soon.

EDIT;- Just had a thought...if he wants to do it on the cheap an illegal driver would be perfect...he's not gonna be playing in any club comps anytime soon and he'd pick a decent one up for about £30.

Obviously used clubs are a great bargain, but I can't help but think of the TaylorMade RAC OS2s - those things are on stupid-cheap closeouts all over the place now and that is a downright beautiful set of irons. Easy enough to hit that he can start with them, and good enough that he can carry them for a long time to come.

Can't see the 565s on Direct Golf any more though MG.

RAC OS2's are on the list it's just finding a cheap enough set. I don't think we want to get beyond irons yet by the way.

Maybe a 4 or 5 wood for now. Was thinking TM 200 series as they are very good and dead cheap.

A beginning golfer does not need an entire set of clubs. To start a beginner needs a short iron (8, 9, PW) A real wedge 50 degrees or greater and a putter.

The game of golf should be taught starting from 3 ft from the green and then moving out. Until a new golfer can consistantly hit short irons well up in the air there is really no need for other clubs. After those three clubs I would suggest a Driver 43.5 inches. Yes a know it is short but the shorter the club the more flexable the shaft the easier it is to hit.

Thanks, I couldn't agree more and that's why I started him off at our pitch and putt. But from what I saw it won't be long before he can use a mid iron pretty well. May as well get a 5-PW imo - woods etc can wait and I have told him to grab as many putters as he can find and try them out.

Thinking MacGregors could be the best idea and thx Adam for the Cleveland link, another possibilty.

Lynz do gerat starter sets, branded shafts and grips, decent stuff for a few quid. A mate bought one, full set inc putter for £180 inc delivery. When I saw it the bag was last years model but sold for 100£ on its own and the shafts were TT and grips GP. Great set.
