How can some people hit a 5 iron 200 yards and their driver only 250-260?

200 yard 5i is tour distance, and you would be hitting your driver much further than 250ish. I call b.s. on the 200 yard 5i.

Driver: 265
3w: 230
4i: 190
7: 155
PW: 125, but hardly ever take even close to a full swing with a wedge, usually use it for 110-120 yard shots with 3/4 swing max.

Call BS all you like. I play a 200 yard par 3 and routinely get pin high hitting 5 iron. Having alot of clubhead speed doesn't mean you can score. It just means you have alot of clubhead speed. Tour distance and tour accuracy are two very different things.

As long as you swing properly, the pros dont hit it a mile with the irons by any means, a lot of times you may see them hitting 7i from a 195yrd par 3, but take into account weather etc. Ive seen Tiger hit 7 on a 210 par3 and a 155 par 3.

I usually hit my 5 iron about 190-200 on a flat hole. I always leave like a 10 yard gap to allow for mishitting it.

ok ill be "that" guy...

driver = 310
3w = 280
3i = 230
4i = 215
5i = 200
6i = 180-190
7i = 170-180
8i = 155-165
9i = 145 -155
pw = 135-145
52* = 120-130
58* = 110 and in

with my lower irons, i hit them so high from spin so i start losing distance.

i have a big gap between 3i and 3w... definitely need to get a hybrid.

My longest drive (in the FW) this year is 320 yards. My typical drive (same hole) is 265ish.

1W - 265
5W - 220 yards up to 240 (depends on whether it's off the tee or FW)
5 (25°) hybrid - 180 to 190
7I - 150
PW - 115-120
GW - 90-100

I didn't list them all... 10 yard spacing is about typical, as it is for most players.

Go easy on me guys...I'm 70 years old and weigh 165 lbs. ;) Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, here are the yardages I plan for when selecting a club from the bag.

Driver...210-225 yds.
4 wood...185-200 yds

3 iron...175 yds
4 iron...165 yds
5 iron...150-155 yds
6 iron...140 yds
7 iron...130 yds
8 iron...120 yds
9 iron...100-110 yds
PW.......85-95 yds
SW.......70-80 yds

Note: All irons listed above are actually Tour Edge Hybrid Iron/Woods.

I get fairly consistent distances with everything except my driver. I never know who will show up the 230 yd guy or the 270 yd guy. Most often it's the 230.

Driver - 230
3W 200
5W 190
5I 160
PW 90

Driver = 250-265 down from 265-285 last summer (occassional 300)
3 wood = 220
3 hybrid = 200
4 hybrid = 180
4 iron = 170
5 iron = 160
6 iron = 150
7 iron = 140
8 iron =130
9 iron =120
PW = 110
(use PW for most chipping etc)

Not long but usually straight.. :)

My yardages are pretty close to yours. My game is all about staying in play and not having "blowup" holes -- every time I start a round I tell myself "nothing worse than a double and no three-putts".

Since I got a GPS this year and new clubs I finally got them dialed in on the course with real balls and under real playing conditions.

Driver: 235-260 (normally about 240 and I usually know where it's going)
3 wood (15°): 215-225
5 wood (18°): 185-205 *
2 hybrid (16°): 200-210
3 hybrid (19°): 180-190
4 hybrid (23°): 170-180 *
4 iron (24°): 165-175
5 iron (27°): 155-165
6 iron (31°): 145-155
7 iron (35°): 135-145
8 iron (39°): 125-135
9 iron (43°): 110-120
PW (47°): 100-110
GW (51°): 90-100
(I almost never hit a full shot with the SW or LW)

* I normally don't play these clubs but I'm thinking of pulling my 4 iron for the 4 hybrid.

I always wonder in threads like this how people measure their distances?

There are a lot of variables when you're out on the course. First, all holes are measured on the ground and straight down the middle of the fairway. If you cut the dogleg on a downhill 400 yd. par 4 and only have 120 to the green, you did NOT hit a 280 yd tee shot (even without any roll). I hear that one all the time out on the course. Also, a tee shot to an uphill par 3 will play longer than indicated since it cuts off a significant amount of your carry because it lands sooner on the downward flight. Downhill par 3's play shorter for the opposite reason. Most golfers know this from experience but when estimating how far the shot actually travelled don't take it into account.

One nice thing about measuring with GPS or rangefinder is that they measure straight line distances. If you cut that dogleg off the tee it will measure from tee box to where the ball ended up in a straight line. It won't do anything about the elevation changes but as long as you measure on a relatively flat shot the distance will be accurate.

Zebco or Rapala (don't remember which) used to make a fishing scale called the "De-Liar". I think I am going to name my GPS that same thing. I can't tell you how many people I've measured shots for this year who said "That thing can't be right!" :laugh:

Yesterday, playing with sssmokin, I hit my 905R 280 yards straight down the middle. I know that's correct because we had GPS on the cart. :)

Ideal conditions?

Driver: 290-300
3 Wood: 260-280
3 Iron: 230-250 (250 off the tee, 235 off the deck usually)
4 Iron: 210-230
5 Iron: 200-220
6 Iron: 190-200
7 Iron: 170-180
8 Iron: 160-170
9 Iron: 145-160
PW: 125-140
SW: 110-120
LW: 0-100

That's pretty accurate, and fairly well tested. Oh yeah, bear in mind, I've never hit my irons as far as I have with blades.

Nothing goes as well and far as blades well struck.

After spending nearly 7 hours with a rangefinder and a notebook on a slow day at the golf course, I have my distances.

Driver: 276
15* 3W: 253 Tee 241 deck
(Carry now)
2I- 227
3I- 215
4I-198
5I-187
6I-175
7I-166
8I-155
9I-142
PW-129
56*-112
60*-98

All of these were from the averages from a wierd perfectionist with WAYYY too much time on his hands.
