How much do your scores vary over time?

As I have observed my stableford postings so far - it has reminded me of my "score dispersion". Over the years, the variance in my scores from my handicap is usually quite small. Out of 20 scores, 16 or so will be within 2-3 shots of my handicap average.

On the other hand, there are golfers who have huge swings in their scores. You'll have a guy with a 12 handicap who will play 36 holes one day and have a 90 in the morning and follow this with a 77 in the afternoon.

Golf Digest had a great article about ten years ago concerning "Who you Should Play with in a Two Man Tournament". It basically said that Mr. Tightscores (me) should pair up with Mr. Bigswings and play together. Their strengths and weaknesses would compliment each other.

How about you? Are you more like Mr. Tightscores or Mr. Bigswings??

Mr Bigswings

On my trip I ranged from a low of 22 to a high of 42 stablefords. But that may be partly down to playing some pretty tough courses mixed with a couple of easier ones. And the damned weather conditions on the Emerald Isle! I knew it was windy when fish were getting blown out of the sea and over the course. Do they count as a natural hazard?

On my regular course here, it's a bit tighter but can still be 10 points difference from one week to the next.

Consistency...you have it, it seems - I long for it!

I agree with KA. I'd love to be consistent. I'm capable of shooting in the upper '80's one day, then 100+ the next day. Then again, I think I'm becoming a swing ho. I'll pick up tips and try to modify my swing to fit the tip. Sometimes it works. Often it doesn't.

My first post reply.....

I unfortunately have not got to play for a while and just got to take the game up again..... My first time out playing I shot a 148 and got hooked at the age of 14. Three years ago, I decided to sell my clubs, because I just started a new job and just did not have enough time to play and my game got to a point where my clubs were not sufficient enough to help me cut off strokes. I had a set of old 3rd-rate Northwesterns from maybe K-Mart?? (Couldn't afford the Pings I wanted). I got the chance to buy an old Wilson "The Whale" Driver w/ Wilson Firestick shaft (John Daly was the idol then)...... That helped a little off the tee.

Well after 12 years, I got down to a 10-12 handicap, with my last 2 scores being a 79 & 82. Now after 3 years without even taking a stroke, I'm back with a vengeance. Got me a set of Wilson Matrix with graphite shafts and ready to hit the links. And yes, if I wanted the new Ping G2's or TaylorMade R7's, I could definitely afford it, but I have always been a 2-3 rounds a month golfer. Didn't really need to spend a lot.......

Happy Hacking......

i've more established that my handicap is about a 13, things are on their way down though, but anything can range a couple strokes higher or lower, but most of the times lower.

Mr. Bigswings for me.

In my last 20 outings (which is how many back your handicap goes) I have shot a low of 79 and a high of 99. For me, some days I wake up and don't feel right about a part of the swing or my frame of mind. Also, I find I play better in the afternoon than the morning.

I'm confused.

4 bloody marys and a case of Old Milwawkee cures hangovers?

That'll cure a hangover and start a whole new one all at once. But if it works for you I say keep going with it. :)

Its weird, but I sometimes play better hungover. I am focusing so hard on standing up (not falling down) that I cannot overswing. As a result - I sometimes play very steady golf while nursing a class 7 or below hangover.

Class 8-10 and I am toast.

I guess we wouldn't work out...

...In tournament golf that is. My scores per 10 rounds is much like yours. I'll hit a bump about every ten rounds.Worse case scenario is 5-7 stroke swing diff. Thats a bad day associated with assorted shots all over the map.:hunter:

I'm capable of posting some pretty crappy scores but I'm mostly consistent. Last summer when my index was down to 15 my personal best was still just +12. Most rounds are probably withen 3 strokes either way from my index.

Speaking of hangovers. One of the guys who plays with us once a month or so always plays better with a hangover. The worse he feels, the better he plays. Like you said Bravo, I think he's concentrating so hard on just not falling down that his swing stays relaxed.

I have something like a +/-5 score dispersion.
I sometimes try a new swing change on the course. Not a good idea, but I mainly view my rounds as practice rounds, even when competing against others. Hahaha...

BTW, welcome to the board MBeachGirl :)

When I get into June, my scores are within 2 or 3. Almost never off the map. But in the spring, when I'm re-learning my swing, I can shoot 74 on day and two days later light it up with an 88.

I think Bigswings are from not playing often enough/not hitting the range. And those big scores are from not knowing your swing well enough to adjust during a round.

You know why Tiger and Vijay are the best in the world? Because they practice like crazy. If you go out an expect to shoot your handicap or below after 2 weeks off, good luck. Your touch will be off, you won't have the driver under control and your irons will suffer.

It's a great game...
