Is Bigger Better?

Hi All
I am new to the game and I have a question about drivers. From the standpoint of ball control, is a bigger driver, more specifically a driver with a high volume/oversized head better than one with a smaller head. Thanks

I think for most people, including myself the answer is yes. You still have to find the right driver for you but the bigger drivers are more forgiving and that's always nice.

There are a few guys here who prefer the smaller driver heads but for the most part they're better golfers who can hit the sweet spot consistantly.

I have a 460cc driver myself and while I don't hit it that much farther than my old 360cc, I do hit more fairways with it and that's what really counts. If Tiger and Vijay feel like the bigger heads help them, who am I to argue.

DL - as a generality...they are straighter and a bit longer than the previous models.

What is your budget?

Distance isn't associated with the size of the club head. Bigger club heads only provide bigger sweet spot for greater forgiveness.

Ball control as in workability of the golf ball? I don't think the clubhead volume have anything to do with that.

You can find a brand new Mizuno MP-001 460cc (the USGA limit on clubhead size) with a Grafalloy Blue shaft for $150 just about everywhere. I've seen them for that price on www.rockbottomgolf.com and a local Golfsmith.

Actually, CK, the $150 at RBG was for the 370 and 400cc models. But a great driver, regardless.

Just to clarify, (not to be an ass, honest) it's the 400cc that Golfsmith has for $150.00. The 460cc is still $350.00. :)

400cc is huge, in my books.

My 380cc GBBII makes me shake my head when I think of the Warbird I used to have.

The forgiveness, however, in a 400cc is incredible compared to that of a smaller driver head. You wouldn't be disappointed in going to JUST 400cc's. :D

Many Thanks

Thanks for all the input. Sorry for waiting so long to thank everyone, been on vacation. The driver I presently have is a Nicklaus Airmax 10.5 deg 450 cc. I definitely would not want one with a larger head. This one feels kinda like a combat boot on the end of broom stick. At present I hit about 180 to 200 yds with it, but I am still more accurate with my 3 wood. Again thanks to all

you probably wouldn't notice any (significant) difference between and 450 and a 460 anyhow

If you can hit a 3 wood consistently in the sweet spot, and considering that a 3 wood has a small clubhead, why would it be difficult to hit a driver with a smaller clubhead?
Where's the forgiveness in the 3 wood?
And where is the sweet spot on a 450cc clubhead?
The sweet spot isn't bigger, they are more forgiving on off-center hits.
But the clubface is so big, it needs to be forgiving all over the place...

Just my 2 cents :)

Good post, Loop.

I'm of the same mold. The sweet spot in terms of distance is the same for any club, right smack in the center. But off center hits still go straight with the big heads, moreso than with the smaller ones.

I'm with Loop, you still need to hit it on the screws to have it fly.

My only thought would be that the driver shaft is longer making it more difficult to consistantly hit the sweet spot. I hit my 9 iron on the screws way more often than I do with driver so the forgiveness of the bigger head can help.

Of course I suck so I'm sure that has something to do with it.
