IS the interlock grip a must?

I have been using the interlock grip since my dad told me that is the way to do it, he was a good player so I did it. It works for me although my ring finger pays the price. I get a blister from the glove I guess? This is a nice deep one too. Any ideas?

Guy I play with is a single figure handicap and he doesn't interlock - his wee fingers are too small, he says. he alternates between a baseball grip and an overlap. Works for him....try them, see how you get on.

I have no idea about pro golfers, but i'm sure some here will have detailed dossiers on that sort of thing!

I have used both this season and I was doing better with a 10 finger grip then an interlock but then I switched back to an interlock. Im not sure why though.

Rule of thumb (he he) is:

Interlocking grip works better for those with smaller hands.

Vardon/Overlap works better for those with bigger hands.

10 finger is only good for cleptomaniacs,

The best grip is the one you feel most comfortable with. I started with overlap and have experimented the interlock but always go back to what I started with. I think I read that Tiger uses an interlock grip primarily because it's what he started with so it feels right.

No disrespect to your dad, but there is no one correct grip. Pick the one that feels best and stick with it.

Jack Nicklaus was a notable exception in that he had large hands but used the interlock. Proof positive that the grip that feels most comfortable is the way to go....

Actually, Bravo... Jack had unusually small hands for his size. In "Golf My Way", there is a life-sized outline of his hands, and they were short little things. They were also weak little things, as he admits to having his wife open jars for him.

Not that it means anything, except proof positive that I am ass enough to point it out.

I have really big hand and I don't like the interlock that much. But it was the only one I knew of. What is the Overlap Grip? Does anyone have a link that describes it.

The overlap/Vardon grip is very similar to the interlock, except that the pinky finger doesn't lock into the back hand, but instead lays across the crease made by the top hand's pointer and "birdie" finger.

This sounds like the manual for changing the tires my old Acura Integra. It went something like this:

"For wheel change, take wheel holder and unmount from pin to the ground. Next, rotate upwise until full. Release wheel from cage. Using proud force, pull downwards till mark reaches 6 o'clock. Repeat 1-3."

Wait till you have kids one day and your putting toys and bikes together on Christmas Eve. Not sure who writes those instructions but it has to be someone who speaks english as a second language.

Wow...I did not know that. While he is not a huge guy - he is certainly bigger than the average male. I think the average size is about 5'9" and about 160. I would judge Nicklaus to be slightly over 6 feet but we all know that at various times his weight was pretty stout.

Somehow I had the impression that he used the grip that was 'contrary' for someone of his hand size.

Well - all the more reason for people to follow the convention. Nicklaus used the grip (rule of thumb) that was suitable for his handsize...
