John Daly S-500 golf clubs - any good ?

I've been golfing for about 5 years now and get out maybe 7 or 8 times a year.
I've been using the same set of clubs for the last five years, which I think cost me about $250 at the time. Needless to say, I'm looking to purchase a better brand name set and am excited to see what (if any) difference they will make in my game.

I am considering buying used. I have been searching e-bay for some good deals.
Are the John Daly S-500 clubs any good? I saw some on e-bay that looked nice.

Any other advice on some decent clubs for an intermediate player would also be appreciated.

If you are looking for clubs that are forgiving then a set of cobra or callaway cavity backs are nice choice but if you are confident and can strike the ball well mizuno or taylormade would be nice for you. But get to a pro shop and take some for a test run and see how you go.

I'm not sure about the s-500 clubs, but seeing as how you only get out about 7 or 8 times a year I'm guessing your not on top of your game...I mean no disrespect by this, just an assumption. With that being said I think JuniorGolf is right about getting some irons such as Callaway that have a cavity back and are very forgiving. If you can get some irons that you really hit well, golf is going to be much more fun and your gonna what to get out there way more than 7 or 8 times a year.

In other words, it's not about the clubs as much as it is about technique.

Playing only 8 times a year, new clubs will probably just be new clubs and your game will stay the same (I'm an expert on this ).

I generally agree with this. I'm taking a few lessons to work on my swing this year and am going to try and get out closer to 20 times. If we had better year-round weather and $$$ wasn't a factor, I'd be golfing a lot more.

I am making pretty good shot with my irons. They are almost always right on target - I just need to get a little more distance on them. My driving and pitching could use some work though.

I can't help wondering sometimes that if I had some nicer clubs, my shots would go that extra distance or my drives would not hook quite so much. If I pick up some decent clubs, then I can quit blaming the clubs all the time and start to seriously blame my technique !

It is the swing and not the club, but I will say this...There is something about having nice new clubs that gives a person a renewed feeling of self-confidence that can really have a huge effect on you play.
