quite a few senior pros, Loren Roberts and Langer for example, no longer carry a 4 iron, 3 wood to 19/20 ish hybrid then 5 and even 6 to PW. presumably the lofts are quite strong but still, seems to be the way to go if they do it.

great bag for amateurs

driver
3 wood at 15 or better 4 wood at 16
20 degree hybrid, at 200 yards out you just want to be on or safe
5-pw, 5 iron at 27 degrees no stronger, PW to 47
two wedges 54 and 60

quite a few pros carrying 54 60 now it seems

the key is the 5 iron, it should be regarded as along iron and used with caution outside of 8 handicap, better for the higher handicaps to swing smoothly on a rescue and get the ball running for the green

Drop the 4W, add a 4i for punch out, add a 50* wedge - that's my bag.

I'm settling in on the following bag makeup:

Driver
4W (17°)
3h (19°)
4h (22º)
5h (25º)
6-PW (PW is 47º)
50º/6º, 54º/12º, 58º/4º Wedges
Putter

I have nice 10 yard gaps on everything up to the 4W and the hybrids are steel shafted and have the length/swingweight of my irons so they play like long irons but my misses are much much better than the long irons were.

Now when I "thin" a hybrid, I still hit the green much of the time (even though it's not pretty)...

I hit the 5h a lot, it's my 165 yd. club and I get a lot of approaches of this length. It goes high and lands soft, much better than I was doing with my 5i the past few years. Big improvement.

I just ditched my 19* hybrid and picked up a 17* 2-hybrid. Mainly because I have a 9.5* driver, and a STRONG 13* 3-wood, and the 17* closes the gap a bit.

Debating if I WANT the 3-iron back in the bag, or to pass on it and keep my 4 wedge set up. I'm thinking pass and continue to run the 4-PW, 52, 56, 60.

why do you need a 13 degree 3 wood? imho, unless you play off the tips on a tour prepped track at 6800+ it just seems an unnecessary club for amateurs

Aye. On any day that I can drive the ball DECENTLY, I'm either:

Hitting a club MUCH shorter than 3W into the green,

Or so far away that I'm just going to position my next shot anyway.

Can't see ever bagging a 13* anything. Even the 15* gets very little use.

Most of the courses I play are around 6700-6850 from the tee's before the tips. I don't play from the tips often, because I'm not very long, but of the 4 courses I play regularly, 3 of them are over 7000.

Alot of the time, they are very narrow, and I use 3-wood off the tee alot, and I preffer the lower launch with my 3-wood as well. :)

Wierd me just took the 4th wedge and the 4 wood out of the bag and went back to a 14* 3 wood and 18* 5 wood. I have better control over my wedges than I do the longer clubs and had too big a distance gap between the 4 wood and 20* hybrid. So I went from a 48-52-56-60 wedge set up to 48-52-58. That will change to 46-52-58 when I switch back to some old school Titleist 762s after they have all been reshafted.

I am not one that changes his bag often so this is being done with considerable thought.

gwlee,

I'm thinking of doing that exact same thing. I'm a little more creative with my wedges, so I open them, close them up, and try different shots with some of the same clubs.

48-52-58 sounds like what I might do. Then I do 9.5*,13*,17* and my 20* hybrid, and run 4-PW.

Hrm.. Might try that tomorrow afternoon and see what works. I hate to take out my 3-hybrid. That club is beat to death, and it gets all the dirty work.
