Ahem...... to the uninitiated (me) . what's the significance of Labor Day stateside ? .... is it a trade union day in recognition of your endeavours throughtout the year.
We have a May Day celebration - The celebration of May Day as international workers' day has a long tradition. In pre-industrial days, the first of May was the date when workers were hired for the year. The hard reality behind the maypoles and Morris dancers was the hiring fair, which meant the difference between being able to live and eat for the next year or not.
This together with other holidays/celebrations seems to have been hijacked in recent times and has assumed greater political overtones in some parts, and now seems to have an anti-capitalism stigma. To me it's a day off and the possiblity of sneaking an unexpected 18 holer in........
