To be honest a 6 iron is a club that you just really don't use, even on long courses. Say a long par 4 is 420 (which is rare around these parts), if then you hit it 270 of the tee and only have an 7 or 8 iron left?
We have a few long par threes that if they are playing downwind, I might hit a 6 iron, but it would have to be blowing pretty good.
I played some rounds at my old home course with a 7 iron and a putter once

So, you hit a 5 wood to the corner that leaves you about 170ish coming home. 6 iron territory. If you don't catch the 5 wood clean, you're hitting 4 iron or 5 iron, as you don't wanna hit the 3 wood into the scrub.

It must have been the rage about 30-40 years ago to make these stupid doglegs at the muni type courses to make up for a lack of real estate. There's a few courses around here that you need to hit 5 iron off the tee and then about a 7 or 8 iron in. What a waste.
