Growing up, our neighbor to the west was always baking homemade bread. She knew my parents were "dirt poor" so called often to have me come up and get a loaf of her bread. The back porch opened right into the kitchen. She'd always want me to sit and visit for a while. But, most of the kitchen chairs were "occupied" with laying hens or cats. Nothing unusual to have a couple of small pigs or a goat in the kitchen. When she would shoo chicken out of a chair so I could sit there, feathers would fly across the room. Was good bread and we never thought twice about it.
We drank milk straight from the cow. Strained it to get the "big stuff" out of it. Nothing pasteurized or sanitized. Today's health agencies would go bonkers if they found people living in the "squalor" we grew up in. We never thought twice about it.
