One of the most memorable that some of my friends and wife saw was maybe a 225-230 yard 5 wood as well, about 2 feet behind the red tees on the tee box, ended up on the green and birdied the hole. We were playing match play now that I think about it, and the men won the hole.

So let's here it guys!!! Fess up! :D

Not limited to guys, because I have played with women that "firmly believe" in the "Pants down" rule, although having ended up behind the red tees on an errant first shot, due to a tree on their first shot, did not observe the rule. :D

In Dallas we call that "Fort Worth Rules". I'd rather not have my playing partners with their pants down (at least the guys):)

This reminds me of a great round we had this year.

A friend of mine, huge hitter, steps up to the second tee box. It's a straight away par 4, about 424 with zero wind. I had punched mine out about 315, leaving me a nice sand wedge to the green. I'm looking at a chance at a bird with a nice approach.

At this point, I must add that Ted has driven this green in the past with a tailwind and dry conditions. It's that wide open and straight.

Ted, he hauls off and tops his drive into the deep grass off the front of the tee box, with his ball just barely reaching the edge of the ladies tee. Needless to say, the calls and jabs came out like a firestorm.

"Drop the purse so you can hit your second!"

"Are your panyhose falling down?"

"You sure shave alot, for a lady!"

Red faced, Ted pulls his 3 wood. I grab the card from my pocket to measure this out for him. "337, plus the 3 yards to the back of the tee box (snicker)" I exclaim.

Two waggles, a glance and Ted unleashes the fury of a higher being on his Callaway HX Red. The ball cruises at 20,000 feet and experiences little turbulence on it's way to Mephis, of which we later renamed the 2nd green. The ball, if you can call it that after the ride he gave it, lands on the green and checks up - yes - checks up to about 6 feet.

The guy lies one from 340 and has a 6 footer for bird.

How many times are you ever gonna see that?

Since, Ted has topped maybe 3 drives. None of us ever - EVER - doubt him anymore. He normally shoots around 77-78ish, but this is playing maybe 10-12 times a year. Just a natural talent.

I'll remember that 3 wood as long as I live. Unbelievable.

Are you sure he's not called Jason?

I may have posted this before but it's still my best, urrr worst, whatever.

It was a 192 yd par 3. I'd been having an ok day so I'm not sure why but I whiffed the tee shot with my 4 iron. We all had a pretty good laugh and I managed to compose myself enough to hit a shot pin high and about 2 yds. right of the green.

What made it memorable was that I chipped in my 3rd for an unlikely par. It's also tough to forget because I was playing with our club manager and he put in our monthly newsletter as a puzzle question.

How do you hit the ball only twice, never putt and make par? No one got it.

Whifftastic!

I can recall once, when in my prime I had a whiff!

Our college traditionally plays a series of annual matches against the big clubs in Ireland. Royal Co. Down, Royal Portrush, Royal Belfast, Royal Dublin etc.

These tend to be 36 hole dinner matches, with a heavy emphasis on the "social side". Most of the members were former grads who were decent players, but still fancied their chances against the "young bucks".

The matches were nearly always the same. College takes a big lead into lunch, Club players fill students with alcohol over lunch, Students take on large volumes of food and alcohol (see dictionary for defn. of Student), students play atrociously in the afternoon. Big turnaround in scores and outcome is very close.

Anyways, this one time I played, the chat over lunch was all about the poor sod the previous year who was so drunk after lunch that he had an air ball. This guy was a 1 or 2 index. Everyone laughed as they coiffed their wine and port. BIG MISTAKE!

So after a few more I found myself standing on the first completely plastered. I addressed the ball, saw three of them, went for the one in the middle and I missed...in front of everyone! I think I was very quick to scuff my next attempt off the tee and get outa Dodge!

I think I was 7 down after 7, in a total daze. I remember feeling embarrassed through the drunken haze.

I have always respected a whiff since that sorry episode. The stuff of legends!

I don't recall and shots not making the ladies tee, but I do have a whiff story.

Actually it was four whiffs! I hit a bad tee shot, and the ball ended up against a tree nestled between two roots. I was forced to play a left-handed shot. No big deal, I shoot left in hockey, so I took out my 3-iron and tried to knock the ball into play. I whiffed...and again...and again...and again...

Finally I managed to knock the ball away from the tree. I then hit 3-wood onto the green and ended up with a quadruple-bogey 9!

My only whiff story was more of a tragedy. I had a ball lieing under a tree in a league. My partner that I was paired up with a couple weeks into the year for the remainder of the year, being the ahole that he is, tried to get me to say it was a practice stroke. I wouldn't, although we won anyways. 3 weeks later in the Semi-final round of our tournament, he whiffed on a ball on a tee shot, said it was a practice stroke, acknowledged in the cart to me that it was a whiff. I told him if he didn't count the stroke we would be disqualified, he refused and said no one would ever know. We won the match by 3 holes in the end, he said "See, it wouldn't have mattered anyways", I said nothing until he turned in the card. At which point I had our team disqualified.

Kind of my way of ending the relationship and making it apparent that I did not wish to be his partner the next year. It became apparent in the end that he wanted to win at all costs and I was left wondering how many of our wins during the year were related to him cheating. Not sure what happened with him, because we ended up moving prior to the following year.

To end on a positive, my other whiff story was that my wife told me if I ever whiff with my G2 driver, I need to quit the game because of the size. I have had an occasion where I am convince the wind of a whiff blew the ball off the tee going about 1 inch. She just started laughing.

I had a whiff once. Willimantic Amateur Open. 1st hole, hybrid down the middle, 8 iron left of green, chip, 2 putt. bogey. 2nd hole, dogleg right with a tailwind. Drivable. Need to make up bogey.

Absolutely ripped the ball, one of the longest of my life. Trouble is, the hole went right, and my ball went left. Went right through a few trees about 320 out(BIG HIT!). Rolled down a hill into stuff not meant to be played out of. Thornbushes, 3-foot high grass. Not sure how i found the ball, but i took a stance, made a short, hard swing, and caught a huge patch of grass behind the ball, totally missed the little bugger. Another shot, punch through trees into a bunker, skull out, chip, and 2 more putts, i had a smooth 8.

Need to redeem myself this year

Didn't Tom Lehman shank or top a ball on the first hole to start the year after winning the PGA Championship. I though I remember him saying he did this after they announced on the first tee

I'm guessing he didn't do the "Manly" thing on live TV....

Not sure this qualifies, but this was pretty wacky, nonetheless.

I was playing a par 5, and was left with a long second shot from a pine straw lie. I grabbed my 3-wood and RIPPED at it, swinging so hard that I actually spun over 180-degrees in my shoes. My playing partner yelled: "Look up!" I did just in time to see the ball coming straight down to me. I caught the damn thing out of mid-air without moving an inch. It had so furiously topped the shot that it had just bounced straight up in air. I laughed pretty hard over that one.

I am sure others have seen this also but I got quite a laugh out of it happened to my playing partner.
on a par 5 they had the pvc posts in the center of the fairway at both the 150 and 200 yard marks. my partner was straight in line with the 200 yd post and the green but back about 12 feet. he is never one to hit a straight shot but did that time, just a little (a lot really) too low. Man oh Man does that pvc shatter everywhere when he hit it. best laugh in a long time as he fell to the ground (and wet ground at that :) ) dodging the debris. made me smile

As they say, if you can catch it, you are entitled to a rehit.

Unless of course you are in a match. Nothing like dodging a ball to no avail, bruising more than your ego and taking a penalty in the process.

I definitely needed a rules official on that one...That was a long time ago, so I don't remember what I did.

By the rules - should I have dropped the ball with a penalty? Similar to hitting one's self with a bunker shot? Would there then be an additional penalty for not playing the ball as it lay (in my hand?).

What do you think?
