My epiphany...today's round

Ok, ok.....I blew off work (one of the joy's of self employment) and went golfing. :)

To say that the first nine holes were the worst I ever played would be a gross understatement.

I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if i were indside and all the doors were closed! I sprayed them right, sprayed them left, up down and sideways....I lost 4 balls on a single par 3 (how am I makin' out?) I finished nine with a 56...ok? THERE! I said it!....56!

Epiphany, as defined by websters:
2. A revelatory manifestation of a divine being.
3. a. A sudden manifestation of the essence or meaning of something.
b. A comprehension or perception of reality by means of a sudden intuitive realization:

My friend (paul, who reads here alot but is afraid to post) told me my swing sucks and maybe I should take up bowling. ;) He goes on to tell me that I am WAAY over the top (wtf?) I really had no idea what he was talking about but clearly....something is messed up. He further demonstrates to me what I am doing and what I should be doing. Essentially he had me flatten out my swing.

Naturally, at first, I understood the concept but the implementation was not immediate, about 2 or 3 holes into the back nine I began to "get it"
Irons were getting straight and on target although sometimes the distance was lacking. We played the back pretty loose, 2 or 3 balls at a time to get the feel of this new motion dialed in......I don't have an accurate score because of that but I'm guessing I was in at around 51 or so.

The sun was high, we decided to go for another nine and I was 180 degrees from where I was before. Drives were straight (mostly) and running around 275. Irons and wedges even were feeling great......I have to tell you that my 3 wood off the deck was flawless....I hit it about 4 times and each one was good for 230 yards and straight as an arrow.

I finished with a legit 46 on the final nine (my putting still needs some work) and I hope I can keep this in my memory banks for awhile....thanks Paul!

Ok....I did it, I suck, I know it and I have bared my soul for all to see....there may be hope after all. :)

pics to follow later.

Great....I always love these stories.

You've got a great buddy who can help you like that...get him to come along here and post.

Maybe he can help some of us with our games too.

Hope you can play ASAP to lock in those swing changes. The sooner the better.

All I can say is I hope the pics are suitable for family viewing, with you bearing all and everything ;)

Sling...that's your worst 9? Pfffffffffft.

Today's round - played Fraserview (see an old picture thread of mine) from the Blues - not too far or too hard, 6300 and 118/70, but a beautiful course and a lot of fun.

Front 9, fantastic - 42 - a birdie, a few pars, a few bogies, and two doubles - overall, I was very happy with this and I was on track to really have a great round.

Back 9, AWFUL - 57 - started with two doubles (with one OB), then moved on to a beautiful quintuple on a par 5 that started out with 3 OBs, on to a bogie, then a LUCKY double (lucky that the balls weren't actually lost when they went into the woods), then a snowman on a p4 with an OB and a lost ball, then a 6 on an easy par 3 with a lost ball, then a double, then a PAR to finish! OMG A PAR! IT'S A MIRACLE!

11 penalty strokes in 9 holes (we just take a drop and two strokes if a ball is lost for pace of play). WTF?

So I went and practiced afterwards with my "coaches" who got my focusing on my mental game and had me recreate and replay the back 9 off the launch monitor. If I had to guess, I probably shot a 39 or 40. And the launch monitor isn't forgiving.

I'm telling you man, this game is tough and there's always something to work on. Good on you for being able to figure it out. You'll make nothing if not progress from now on.

Great job, Sling. This game is a true roller coaster ride when you're at our level.

I find the best place to replay the back nine is in the bar. Between myself and my various "Swing Doctors" I can usually shoot a 32. If I'm doing shots I can usually go lower, especially if my putter is hot. But like the launch monitor the bar is not forgiving either. Get on the wrong side of it and you can end up shooting high numbers.

Sling, if we make it to Bravo's in November bring your friend Paul. I have a feeling I may still need him by then. :)

Played yesterday if you can call it playing. Felt more like four hours with Regis Philbin. I guess the good news is that I should play ok this weekend since I've been doing ok every other time out.

Missed a 2' putt, A TWO FOOT PUTT! My round at a glance, we played skins for 18 holes and I had one skin. Yipee. :faintthud

We played 45 holes yesterday. I have yet to break 100 since shooting an 89 over a month ago. Like Silver, I left 10 shots in the form of penalty strokes on the course in one round.

My putter was electric though. I must've drained at least 10 putts from outside 25 feet. Missed three straight par putts within 6 feet though. The joke was that I should move the ball back another 10 feet in order to make the putt.

I did a similar thing after breaking 80 (God I love saying that). I have yet to break 90 since breaking 80 last August. Then again, I've only played about 8 rounds since then.

I hit 12 of 14 fairways and was long off the tee last Friday, but I couldn't hit my short irons or putt worth a damn.
