I'm with Greg, my bike is a 8 year old mountain bike that I put a rigid fork on and street tires. It's also a single speed but I'm sadistic. :D

Older rigid mountain bike for the win!!!

Another advantage of going the used mountain bike route is they are cheap and if it turns out it's not your thing you won't be out very much. If you catch the bug and get into riding more and decide to get a better/newer bike you could probably be able to turn it at no loss.
