I am currently trying out for a spot on my school's golf team and i have encountered a problem with my fellow competitors cheating to beat me out of a spot. It is making me very frusterated to the point of not being able to sleep. My dad tells me that i have to learn to rise above these people and beat them out of a spot. I can currently shoot about 3 or 4 over par consistently for 18 holes (our course is very simple) and I play 3 or 4 times a week. Now these two people who have almost no passion for the game come out and play for the first time all summer and they can walk out and shoot just as good as i can. Which to me doesnt' make sense beacause i know that they are cheating (I don't have any evidence but). This is something that really means a lot to me and i know that when and if they make it on the team and play in the tournament the coach will realise he has made a mistake. Also i am sure i will be able to rise above them and beat the scores that they say they have shot. I would just like some advice on what to do about them because of how much this means to me.

You have no evidence? wake up laddy and stop being silly, these 2 players may practice at a range 20 hours a week.I play with a guy that shoots 72 and he plays 6 rounds a year.

You current attitude is to worry about things you have no control over because you don't have evidence.Ask them for a game and see what happens, then ask for advice. At the moment your speculation is doing nothing apart from effecting your game. You will probably shoot par if you focused on your own game.

You need proof or else if you snitch on them without proof, it will backfire on you big time!

Please do let us know things turn out. It's awful if they are cheating, but you need to know for sure.

The best thing you can do is play a round with them to see. Back when I was in high school, we had a guy that did about the same thing as you say these guys do, come out for the first practice, shoot 39-40, and say he was for real. The thing was the team knew he was "shaving strokes" so we called him out on it. Our coach played a fivesome with us consisting of the 1-2-3 varsity players (I was 2) and Ken (the shaver). He watched us all during the round and low and behold Ken shot something over 50, I don't remember exactly. We did this for a bout a week, and when his scores never improved, I think we all knew. I tend to not believe he was in a slump, cause generally you can see when a good player is in a slump, and he just plain made bad choices and seemed to know very little about the game. But when this was all over the problem was solved and harmony restored......

Failing all this advice, you can always burn their houses down. I'm not saying you should do it, but it can be done. ;)

Tough spot to be in. The thing about golf is that when you cheat, the only one you cheat is yourself. In highschool golf it may mean being #4 instead of #7, and it will work, but once all eyes are on you and you have to perform, you end up sucking the hind tit and sleeping in your own mess.

Stick to your guns, the cream always rises to the top.

Cheers,

I know excactly the frustration that you're going through. It is safe to assume that these guys are cheating, I bet 90% of all golfers cheat regularly. However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to play with them (if you can stand it) to make sure. I would tell the coach your suspicion, and explain to him how that you've worked hard over the summer and how unfair it is. If he blows you off, then he will feel really stupid when the season starts and those "scratch" golfers turn in scores in the 90's and 100's at the first tournament. If that happens, then at least you will have the pleasure of laughing at him and giving him a good, "I told you so.":)

Good luck, don't loose hope

at the private course im at all the kids there cheat in the tournaments. we had a best ball tourney once wich was really fun (especialy cuz i chipped in for birdie on the 18th hole) but of course the winners were the b iggest cheaters on the course. ive played with all the kids before and i know that none of them (even as a team) could have shot 5 under par.

I had the same problem with a kid on my team back in the day. He always shot 2-3 shots better plainly because he didnt know the rules of the game. So it could even be a rules problem. But mostly kids that young who dont care will not keep track very weel. They may be cheating unintentionally. So do as they have said and try to play a round with them OR have the coach play with them if he is so inclined. That should give you the answer regardless.

I've had my balls blackened before, it's a long, painful process to get them back to normal.

Just recently having graduated from High School and playing Varsity my 4 years. I know what it is like to play with them. I had a rich, spoiled rotten kid who played, but he talked his shoes up. So while trying to get ready for distric 10 guys fighting to make the team. He was saying how great he was I knew he sucked and just wanted an excuse to get out of school early and have his name in the paper. Long story short he made the team for district played, got paired with the number one player from the defending champs for the past 5 years got caught cheating quite a few times, cried to dad and left. He was the laughing stock of the tournament. If you can't catch them in the act its not worth bothering. But when you do OH how precious that is. Good Luck.

Well guys i have some good news REALLY good news. First things first i didn't tell the coach about my thoughts but i asked him how many people made the team and it was more than i thought so first of all i was going to make the team either way but i played a round with them our next practice and well our course is 9-hole par 34 with sand greens and it is VERY VERY easy. I shot -1, 33. The others scores go like this. Cheater #1 rounds without coach or myself: 34 and 35. Round with me 37. (this wasn't the person i was worried about and i don't think he cheated) but Cheater #2 rounds wtihout coach or myself: 34 and 35. Round with me: 45 and he cheated to get that. I rest my case. And also our course isn't that great and the school is small so i know both these guys really well. We have our first tournament on tuesday (divisions) and the 23 and 24 we play provincials. Wish me luck.

Cheaters suck. That's all there is to it. The difficulty is catching them. Maybe just suggesting to the coach, or leaving an anonymous letter explaining that he/she (the coach) should play a round of golf with these shavers and see if its real or not. Go right to the top. I know the anonymous letter sounds a bit cheesey, but getting kicked off of the golf team for accusing someone else for cheating when it wasn't true will ruin your day! Good luck, hopefully they'll get found out and booted.
