I ended up going with the macgregor 1025M. I got them new for $250 (pretty cheap) and so far (2 rounds) am very pleased. If i hit 10 balls I'd say 2 are pure buttah, 2 are thin and 6 are indifferent (maybe a little off center).

I am liking the workability though... although they are really hard to hit dead straight

I got a set of Affinity. A 200 set I picked up at Dicks. I've played less then a year and i'm pretty lousy. Would a more expensive set make any differenceat this point?
