Hey, I'm looking to change drivers and want to see if I could get some advice here.

I'm a 6.5 handicap and currently have a 983K and McGregor MacTec both 9.5 Deg., stiff shaft. I like my distance of my 983K, but miss more fairways, and don't really like the feel of the MacTec. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

I'll get labelled as a company man for the number of time I say this, but "Cleveland Launcher Ti 460" comes to mind.

It's easily the best driver I have ever hit. Hands down and away, the straightest and most consistent. The Longest? Maybe not, but i'll take 280 down the pipe everytime on the tee over 310 into the trees.

Give one a whirl. The 460 head is tough to get used to, but the smile on your face and the ball in the middle of the fairway makes you forget about it quite quickly.

DEMO, DEMO, DEMO, AND DEMO SOME MORE. That's what I did and now I have two new drivers to play with. Got a new 11.5* Ping G2, and a new Mizuno 10.5* MP 001. I hit the ball really well with the G2 when I tried it two weeks ago so it came home with me. This Friday I hit some really good drives with the MP 001, so it came home with me too. Now I have to hit them both one after the other and see which one I hit the best outdoors in the real world.

Go demo some drivers and see what you hit the best and that's the one for you, not what I like, or anyone else likes.

Don't know if you live near a Golfsmith but the one here has an all vendor demo day twice a year. You just show up and hit every new club on the market.

Thanks

I've hit a few in a indoor range at my local golf shop, but can't tell much from that. Here's a what I've hit so far, if anyone has an opinion, please share.

1. Callway BB 454
2. Cleveland Ti460
3. Nike SQ
4. Cobra 460SZ
5. Ping G5
6. Adams RPM 460 Dual

All in the 8.5-9.5 loft range and all stiff shafts.

I want to hit the new Cobra Speed Series, but they don't have a demo of it yet.

Why are you hitting only 8.5* and 9.5* drivers? Did you check your launch angle with all of those drivers and make sure you are getting the best launch angle for your ball speed? Unless your hitting the ball over 300 yards of carry, you might want to check out the higher lofted drivers, you might find that you gain 20 or 30 yards of carry distance.

I feel a lot more comfortable hitting a 8.5-9.5 loft. I had a 10.5 for a while, and just didn't feel comfortable with it. I felt like a popped everything up with it, and wasn't getting as much distance. It may be just in my though. I may try the higher lofts again.

When I was shopping for mine I found a shop that let me check different ones out to play a full round with. I ended up with a Cobra 460 instead of the Mizuno because of it too.

IMO there's just nothing better than really being able to try one out.

Yeah, I won't buy anything until I swing on the course or the range. Right now I'm hitting a bunch to narrow it down so when better weather comes, I can demo those. There's so much new stuff coming out now, it makes the decision tough.

Go with the Adam's it easy to hit and gives good distance although you should demo as many others for aslong as you possibly can

Why is it the fault of the 983 that you m iss fairways? Off a 6 index you can play,so it must be something in your technique. You own to cracking clubs,I wouldn't dump them until a pro has checked you out.The 983 will exaggerate swing flaws compared to a say a G2

apologies if that a bit blunt, but far to many people change gear nowadays when some practice is all thats needed. Its your money, and this is just my pov,

Make sure you hit a lot of drivers before you make a choice. I have been to so many demo days where the last club a person thought about trying is the one they hit the best.
Don't buy into the hype, hit what feels the best.

With all of these recomendations for different make drivers you must be real confused. What you really need is to be fitted for the proper shaft to fit your swing timing. Note, swing timing not swing speed. I would recommend going to www.fitchip.com , this is a swing timing fitting system that will pick the club frequency that matches your swing timing from club release to ball impact to get the club back to straight and square. They can actually send you the insturment that dose the fitting to record your swings for analysis.
