Had some lower back pain on Friday, took 2 alleve and went to work. Back was stiff but wasn't to worried about it. I woke up Saturday and back was HURTING! Couldn't call out of work so I took 3 alleve and sucked it up. Saturday when I got home I laid on the bed for awhile and then tried to walk it out and stretch the back out. It was still sore but seemed to be doing better. Sunday I woke up and back was still very stiff, after about an hr of trying to walk it out and stretch it out, my left leg started cramping up and my foot felt like it was asleep. IT FRIGGIN HURT!!!!

Around noon, after about 2 hrs of trying to deal with the pain, my wife took me to the emergency room. Sat in the waiting room for about 1/2hr and in the exam room for another hr until the DR came in. He looked me over and told me I needed an MRI (yay!).

Long story short, I have a herniated disk that is pincing a nerve in my back. That is causing the cramping feeling and numbness in my foot. Dr gave me a script for Vicaden (sp?) and I have to go see a back specialist.

They said surgery may be needed but more likely they would find a way to help me without doing surgery. I guess at this point I am happy to know what is going on but concerned now about my back and my future activities! I guess it's time to take a serious look at losing some weight and change my name to SlimJim instead of Bigjim!

Re: No more golf for me????

Good luck with this, Jim!

Thanks man! I actually feel ok today, just a little stiff, haven't taken any of the Vicaden yet either (kinda wondering how that will mess me up!).

Well... look at it this way... at least it didn't happen in the prime of golf season! Winter time! Get it fixed and be ready for summer! :)

I bet I won't feel anything else either, the thought crossed my mind!

You're not kidding! The way I see it I have at least 4 months, most likely 5, to get my back straighted out (no pun intended) and back in good shape before golf season starts again!

I never realized how much pain your back can cause! I had some back pain in February and went to see the Chiro, he cracked me a few times and set me straight. This was FAR worse than that time though. Man oh man, I thought I was dieing!

Back pain can be the root of an absolutely miserable life. I don't know how people live for years with chronic back pain.

I hurt my back freshman year of highschool playing football....some of the most painful months of my life. I'm glad i let it heal and haven't re-injured it(knocks on wood) because it was terrible.

Hope you get it fixed up Jim! Make sure you're 100% before doing anything that could cause re-injury.

Re: No more golf for me????

I'm sorry to hear so mate; disk problem are always annoying. My school favors always surgery over long term treatment since at the end you'll end up in surgery if your disk is herniated. Bright side of the story? Recuperation after a discectomy (taking out the disk) is quite good and in a long term basis it shouldn't hurt a lot your daily life.

P.S. Make sure you start stocking up with Lady-Senior Flex shafts :D

LOL, I had a pink aldila NVS that I hit the snot out of whatever head I mixed it with. Maybe I should try to find another!!

They talked about surgery also about steroid shots and stretching exercises. I plan to do a bunch or research before deciding for sure either way.

Avoid the surgery at all costs, if you can. It's been my experience with multiple friends that surgery on the back rarely turns out well.

I've heard that as well. I have an appt with the orthopedic specialist tomorrow at 2PM, they will have the results from the MRI that the ER did yesterday. If they recommend surgery I will be getting a second opinion, we have one of the best Hospitals in the country about 1.5 hrs from here (Dartmouth Hitchcock Med Center). I have toyed with the idea of just going directly there, but decided to stay close to home for now.

Re: No more golf for me????

I have been plagued with lower back problems since high school. Nothing has helped my back more than my inversion table. Unbelievable how much good it did. I never have problems anymore. If I start getting a little stiff, I just go hang upside down for about 10 minutes, a couple days a week. I play golf with 2 different chiropractors and they both highly recommend them. Go spend a $100 and get a cheap one. The decompression is incredibly good for the discs in your back.

2nd the inversion table.

Also recommend yoga classes taught by hot, wiry strong, young, hot, tattooed, hot, graceful, (did I mention hot?) chicks in leotards.

Inversion table? Is that the thing where you hang upside down?

Yoga? hmmm I'm 6'3" and 300+ lbs, can you picture me doing yoga?

***Disclaimer***-yes I know, losing weight would help alot and I have been working on it. Believe me I weigh less now than a year ago by 25+ lbs.

Re: No more golf for me????

So when you combine the inversion table with Sib's yoga classes, doesn't it become a never ending cycle: Inversion table gets rid of the stiffness, yoga brings it back, inversion table gets rid.... :D
