Have just found out that Turnberry are to close between 18th and 27th Dec., so my plan to play there on the 18th & 19th is now out the window.

Kilted / anyone else "in the knoo"; can you please tell me some top courses I could think about playing. Ideally, the course would be anywhere bar the northerly parts of Scotland.

have been pondering with playing Dalmahoy or Gleneagles, but would much prefer a Links course. Carnoustie is 25 pounds each, but - and it's a big "but" - you have to play off astro turf mats from the fairway and the semi-rough. Not very good that, like !

Kingsbarns. It's a stunning links course, just east round the coast from St Andrews. It's not cheap but it's the bollox. You come off that course and think "wow". And have a beer in a pretty decent clubhouse.

Between Kingsbarns and St andrews is the St Andrews Bay hotel which has a cracking restaurant, good rooms, spa, pool and two 18-hole links courses. Worth staying and playing.

(By the way, I think the Old Course insists on mats in winter as well).

If you go to Gleneagles there are a choice of courses - Kings, Queens and...umm...the Centenary, I think. The Nicklaus one that's booked to host the Ryder Cup at some point. The Centenary is my least favourite of the three but may be worth playing because of the Nicklaus/Ryder thing.

I used to be a member at Dalmahoy and the East Course - the Championship one - has recently had a few holes changed and now, I believe, is the longest course in Europe off the back tees. Some very pretty holes there. Not a links course, but good quality.

How long you in Scotland for, and is there a budget?

I think I have cracked it following doing a bit of research, mate. St. Andrews Bay Resort is looking like being the destination of choice. 1 night in 5* with dinner and two rounds costing £169. At least I *think* she mentioned dinner, as well. The courses, hotel, everything, in fact, look awesome on the website:

www.standrewsbay.com

Looks the shitz, like :) be able to have a pint in St.Andrews town & have a gander at the Old Course, etc. Sweeeeeet :) :)

:sc: :sc: :sc:

What about Royal Troon? There's some cheap, really good links courses there.

Royal Troon, Old Prestwick, Prestwick St. Nicholas.

Portland's a very good course, but it's not as linksy as the others...

They were lookin' £239 for two nights in a 3* and i round on Prestwick. Not wanting to stay for two nights, either. Heard mixed reports about Prestwick, too. Wouldn't be a patch on my own course, I would imagine...
