Saw the earlier thread and I disagree. The rule is clear – the wedges are legal and Phil is great for the game – here is why…

So I live in SoCal and have the opportunity to drive down to Torrey and see the tournament on Saturday. My 12 year old son (who can now beat me and is a really fine young golfer) and I get up at the crack of dawn and drive down to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1lace>San Diego</st1lace></st1:City>. After watching Phil most of the day – including an incredible eagle on #13, my son decided it would be great to get Phil’s autograph.

Of course people are lined up 3 deep for over fifty yards. Other players run the gauntlet and with their heads down they stop to sign about every fifth or sixth item that is held out. It takes each one about 15 minutes to pass by.

After all the media interviews, Phil finally comes out 30 minutes after finishing and I tell my son (who is just about the last one in the long line to not be too disappointed if he does not get an autograph). He says he understands.

Phil starts going down the line and he looks into the eyes of EVERY and I mean EVERY kid who is hoping for an autograph, smiles and says things like “hope you had fun”. I kept walking back to see if he was going to give up and bolt. He doesn’t. I really can’t believe it. After about 45 minutes he reaches my son and autographs the Torrey Pines putter cover that my son had just bought in the clubhouse. I said to Phil – “Thanks very much for taking the time”. He said “no – thank you for coming out”.

Unbelievable. With all the bad stuff being said about Tiger, I can tell that it has been hard on my son to keep believing that tour players are something to aspire to. Not anymore – at least not with respect to Phil.

Gas: $12
Parking: $15
2 Tournament Tickets: $17 (my son was free)
2 Hot Dogs, sodas and chips $14

Fantastic golf memory with my son and one of the best players ever: Priceless
