Putting the blades on hold

Well, my scoring this year has been OK but variable, with a low of 80, most scores around 84-86 and two scores over 90, culminating in a high of 96. I am having some issues with toe contact, which is really screwing me over in scoring. When I'm hitting the ball well, I'm scoring well, and when I'm toeing, I can't club correctly to save me life.

So, I've decided to switch back to my old FatShafts for a couple of rounds, to see what's what, then maybe buy a new set of intermediate-correction irons if I find my scores stabilizing.

Thoughts?

I've been doing demo days at my club, and a couple of weeks back they had TaylorMade out. I have never been a fan of TM, but I must say, I hit the RAC LTs and liked them alot. Ho, ho, ho! ;)

Can't remember if you've ever tried Mizuno or not. Anyway, you might give the mp-30s a try if not. I really liked the look but with my 16 index I wasn't quite ready for them.

Most of us are so pathetic. We could really call this hotalk.com :p

I hit MacGregor's new(?) blades the other night and was really impressed with how forgiving they are. Also, Bridgestone/Precept has an EC603 PRO SPEC set of blades that are really forgiving for blades. Could be something to look into.

Good call, Dave, haven't thought of MIz. I will demo those too.

I'm currently hitting the 1025M's, 'crowe, and I do like them a lot. Though they are easy to hit as blades go, they are very penal for toe hits, and that's what I'm looking to correct. I don't know about the mid-HCP club they have developed, the 565. Maybe I'll hit that, too. I may just be looking for a change, but I definitely need something that won't take 20 yards off for a hit 1/4-1/2" off center, which is what I'm getting on those less-than-stellar ball striking days.

I am not changing my wedges, tho. I have those bad boys pretty dialed in. ;)

I find that one of the toughest things to do is switch irons. They all have such a different feel, it's difficult to dial in a set in such a short period of time. It took me about 10 rounds and about double that amount of times at the range to where I am about 80% happy with my blades.

Switching back and forth between sets won't help your toeing problem. Stick with what you play best and keep them in the bag. And, if you decide to switch, get ready for problems.

The new 675M's from MacGregor are the bomb. By far one of the nicest sets of clubs i've seen come out in a long time.

Farq, I think that you need to send the Macs to me and I'll let you know if it's you or the clubs. If it's the clubs, as a favor, I'll "dispose" of them for you.

'crowe, you are a gentleman and a scholar. Although the offer is more than generous (God knows anything one can do to reduce the old tension levels) I am pretty sure it's my swing. Besides, who said anything about tossing them? Some days you feel like a blade, some days you don't. ;)

I agree to some extent, Rock. This is not turning out to be an easy fix for me, however, and a more forgiving club may help me to minimize the scoring damage while I figure it out. My current clubs cost me 20 yards on those hits, I kid you not.

Give the Titleist 804 or 704CB a try. I have the 704 it is a bit smaller but they are the same club for the most part. They are real forgiving on of center hits and have a great flight.

I don't blame you there. Sometimes i kick myself for selling my X-16's so quickly, but it did put me on the path to concentrate and not give up on the blades.

I does make me wonder how well I could shoot with a good set of cavity backs now tho...

I've lost about 10 yards in distance on each of my irons, easily....

I can relate, but it's the variability that's killing me. You know the deal. I'm clubbing for one distance, and a toe hit leaves me 15 yds short. That's rarely a good result--sandy, wet, if I'm lucky in the fairway for a pitch. And it's inconsistent. If I was consistently toeing, then I would just go down clubs. This doesn't work, though, because I club down, hit pure, and airmail my target. I figure that more forgiving clubs might give me some leeway, and allow me to gain some consistency. A two or even 5 yard loss should be far less costly.

Thanks, LI. I hit the 690's before I bought my MacGregors a year or so back, and liked them, but not as much as the Macs. If the 704's are more forgiving, that could be a good option. Definitely worth the look.

Wow this is all too familiar. I have the 1025M's (new this season) and I am having distance issues now as well. Am really starting to groove them every once in a while now and am hitting a few long (I have been clubbing up to make up for the 10 yard distance Rock talked about)

Long is DEAD at my mountian venue - imagine a great chip and watching your ball roll away helplessly off the front of the green.

Distance control is key and it is super tough with the blades unless you can pure them every time.

We have the same problems. I am struggling and playing blades (690MB) also, have a low round of 80 also, shot a few 90's also, and have a much higher handicap than I would have expected right now.

I'm probably going to stay with the 690MBs, though. I think my problem is primarily power. I am just not swinging strong enough. My driving is completely gone. My driving and iron play will improve as my swing gets back some power that was lost.

I don't want to be rude, but why do you guys who struggle with blades stick with them? Take a look at the Mizuno and Titleist staff lists.Only Ernies plays the 670s,the rest play a combination of 690s and cavities, same on the Mizuno list, very few players use the MP37s,and a susprising number choose combos in both staff lists

so why don't you guys play a set of combos particularly if you shoot in the 80s? I really can't understand why you struggle when even the pros use combos

I've often thought about this. But I find myself hitting my 4 and 5 irons pretty well these days, so those thoughts are gone - for now. I do, however, carry a 3 hybrid....

I think a PW-7 iron MB and 6-3 iron cavity back would be a sweet, sweet combination.....it's just tough to find sets made up like that unless you buy them new, which i'm not about to do....
