setting up practice area...

Hi,

I want to set up an outdoor practice area and wold like to hear peoples recommendations for good nets and mats.

I have been looking at getting one of these mats - www.truestrike.com - but would like to know what people who have used them think. I also would like a good net that I can leave setup.

Probably be expensive crap - I expect that gel gimmick to be too fragile to live very long.

I had a look at that other thread and it looks like people like that true strike mat. I'm really after a mat that plays like grass, whcih is what this true strike one is supposed to do, and I am tired of hitting of mats that feel like a door mat. I was at the range the other day and a guy there was getting hitting into the mat and sparks flew one time when he hit into the mat hard.

I would like to use grass but it will get torn up so quickly that i want to get the best alternative. If that is true strike then i'll get it - unless any one has any other suggestions.

WHere I live the wind can be a constant 30 mph at times so the only net I trust is a full 10 by 10. They are expensive, about $300 but I don't have to worry about it blowing over.

I have an area where I'm going to set up a permanent net.

Unless I change my mind I'm using a 10' X 10' flat panel that's durable enough to stay outside. On the link below go down to the Ultra Duty Delta Panel and that's the I'm going with. I'll have to sink a couple of posts but I don't think that'll be a big deal.

Avid, it would not do well if it remained outside permanently, as the elements would break it down. However, the net was at least 3 years old when that shot was taken, and it gets probably an average of 250-300 balls a week hit into it.

The positive note is that it folds up in about 5 seconds once you know what you're doing, and it unfolds even faster. It also only weighs a pound or 2, so portability should not be a concern.

I purchased a net from sportnetting and it's great. It's a 20 foot by 18 foot flat panel net and very, very strong. I love it! I also use a Softee Mat, which I think is the best mat on the market. I tried truestrike at the PGA Show in Orlando and didn't care for it.

Have you used the Fiberbuilt mats? I was just wondering how they compare.

I have a 1' x 2' Fiberbuilt mat and it is excellent.

I don't care for the fiberbuilt mats. Quality's really not great and very unrealistic when hitting golf balls. I'm very picking about what gets put into my Academy and I do a ton of reseach on everything I purchase. I have hit from every Mat on the market and to me Softee was the best by far. Just my feelings!

Thanks. I've never liked hitting off mats so it's important to get one that's as realistic as possible. Mostly I guess I'm just tired of driving 25 miles to get to a range.

I agree with DaveE. I just want to hit of a mat that is a close to the real thing as possible. I don't think I have used Softee but I have hit off similar and they are OK until you whack into the mat. I think at some point my wrists will just give in.

MLGOLFNYC I'm interested to know why you choose Softee - what makes it better than Fiberbuilt and TrueStrike?
