Okay, Ive been wondering this, When I First came into Golf my shafts were metal, Now I"am using Graphite . I bought myself a whole Set of TaylorMade's burner Iron's for 45 bux shipped off ebay about 4 weeks ago.

My Question is this, Is there a advantage using graphite shafts over the metal shafts? And whats the Diffrence.

I'm a hacker, so my answer may be wrong - others will, i'm sure, correct me!

my understanding is that graphite shafts are lighter and that steel-traditionalists view them as shafts for old men or ladies. but i reckon that's envy from golfing dinosaurs.

graphite supposedly transmits less shock/vibration back up the shaft. with lighter graphite shafts, more weight can possibly be shifted to the clubhead leading to an increase in distance per club. Or the shaft may be longer, but that may lead to accuracy issues.

the 'feel' will obviously be different as well. did you demo any graphite clubs before buying them?

Roy:

As a - generalization - almost All fairway metals and drivers now use graphite - whereas steel shafts still predominate in irons.

Once again - generalizing: graphite shafts are usually more flexible and steel shafts are usually stiffer.

Overall - graphite is used in drivers and fairway clubs to generate more flex and power. Steel is used in irons to create more control.

In the past few years, very good graphite shafts for irons have been developed. These approximate the "accuracy" of steel shafts while they indeed reduce vibration. Overall - irons with graphite shafts are usually used by senior players, women and beginning juniors.

Tell us about your game and your background. How long have you been playing?

By the way I just seen the forum about the gear talk sorry for a miss placed thread.

Well I have only played total about 7 times. About 5 year's ago when I was in highschool I started playing. Well I gave up Due to a horrid slice/fade .

Well, I'am back in the sport again and I missed it , I bought a set of TaylorMade burner Irons with graphite shafts " thinking it was better" for 45 bux off ebay a few weeks back and Went to wallyWorld and picked up a 20 dollar 426 driver. And then bought a Matching Driver for my TaylorMade set a BubbleBurner for 10 bux shipped off ebay. 250cc 10*loft.

I"am 23 years of age and working my Ass off at the game trying to get better. I went and played This last sunday in Florida at my local Golf Course, Well I shot a 106. Which is pretty good for me because the last time I remeber I shot around 140+ .

I practice about 3 times a week using my same wrong swing trying to make it better. I did infact hit a 285 yard 3 wood shot Using a friends Wilson matrix 3 wood oversized. That was the highlight of my playing for that Day. Sad thing is I cant hit a driver for some reason i hit behind the ball everytime Still hitting the same distance as my brother in law that goes Even after hitting the ground first. I shoot around 260 280 with a 3 Wood. I dont even pickup my driver fearing the fact I'll slice or get a huge fade off target.

I play golf with 3 clubs putter 9 Iron and a 3 wood. Hahaha right? Why a 9 Iron right? Well i hit the 9 Iron about 140, 155. Thats the only damn Iron besides a PW I can hit. I will get a video tape of me hitting the ball in 2 diffrent angle's for all of you to see, Heck I may find myself on the worlds worse golf swing. I can hit it long but cant seem to Hit it straight on a shot to shot pattern. And if you are wondering I dont try to kill it or hit it hard , My friends call me John Daily jr hahah Whatever that means right?

Maybe my brother in law will come on here to confirm my yardage As it does seem false with a bad swing such as mine . Him and his friend were both blown away with my shot when i did make good contact . Well Thats about it for me.

Hey - give yourself a break...you are doing just fine for a beginner.

You have good clubs and the price you paid is super.

One of the things we see in beginners is an overemphasis on equipment and an underemphasis on instruction.

So - for now - be happy with your sticks. Everything is good.

The good news is you are willing and able to spend time on learning. Now let's spend some money effectively.

Find a local pro in your area who works with beginners. Most of them do. Commit yourself to a series of 3-4 lessons over the summer. Get a lesson, hit balls 1-2x a week and play once a week. Get another lesson a month later.

Rinse - repeat until Fall.

Come on here and tell us how you are doing - good or bad. We don't care how high you shoot.

Well, Thats the draw backs of where I live. I have 2 golf course here and none have pro's for lessons. But alot of know it alls and do what i do kinda people. I"am pretty much on my own for that matter.

For the Iron shots my Main problem is hitting the ground first, I always do it and if I tee it up I"ll top the ball everytime. I had alot of people trying to help me that was out there sunday , After my display of my 3 wood shot everyone was willing to help but none told me what i already didnt know. I just need to play more is my excuse for now. Its weird i guess anything above a 8 Iron I cant hit it. Anything under a 8 its like butter. Go figure.

And don't get down on yourself. Golf is such a mental game that if you start to become frustrated, it becomes even harder.

Remember these few things:

Golf is a game.

There's no ass to kick but your own. Play for fun.

No matter how crappy your round is going, that "one shot" that will make your week is just aound the corner. Be patient.

Never, ever judge someone by their golf skills. And don't feel intimidated to play with people that are better than you. This goes the other way as well.

The putter is the most important club in your bag. You can read into anything else, but when all the smoke clears, if you can't use the flatstick, you're screwed. Drive for show, putt for dough.

And last, but not at all least, you're always welcome to vent/question/beam/cry/swear/yell/confuse/laugh about your game here at Shot Talk. :)

The clubs you have are fine. I am not sure if they want us giving links but you can go to www.findalesson.com and put in your zip code and see the closest person to give you a lesson.

I am sure they will work on your weight shift, that is the likely suspect in hitting behind the ball but an instructor can see your swing and I can't.
Good luck and keep practicing.

Nah, I just enjoy the game. These are simple rules that I follow.

If you're ever golfing and you see a guy hammer a 3 wood into the trap next to the green and then walk up the fairway whistling "Axel", the theme to Beverly Hills Cop, that'll be me....

That would be that 147 yard downhill par 3?
