Aside from the price, can someone explain to me the differences, as well as the pros and cons of steel vs graphite shafts for a new iron set I am considering.

Your replies are appreciated.

I'm not an expert, but I'll try.

Steel is basically as stiff as you can get. Graphite will bend when you swing, steel won't. If you swing the same way with steel as you do with graphite, the head on your graphite shaft will leg a hundredth of a second or so behind the steel one. Graphite shafts help to dull slices and hooks, I think. Graphite is also better for slower swing speeds, because there's more power built up in the bent metal.

If you swing fast, you should generally go for either stiff graphite shafts (as opposed to regular) or steel. I'd lean toward stiff graphite, since it's lighter. If it's lighter, you can swing it faster, and you can get graphite shafts that are nearly as stiff as steel.

It's all preference though. Try out a few different kinds of you can. Certain ones lag differently and create lower/higher launch angles.. I wish I could help ya out more, but I'm just a man.

I'm the man that built the eiffel tower out of metal.. and brawn!

Basically, graphite iron shafts are for old guys and women that don't have very fast swing speeds. That's about it.

Look at all the pros. They use steel shafts.

So if you have a slow swing speed, get graphite. If not, get metal.

I am not an expert either but here I go.

The biggest advantage of graphite shafts are their lesser weight, which could translate to more clubhead speed which leads to more distance.

Any steel shafts will have much lesser torque than graphites, and lower torque will benefit those with higher swing speed to more consistency in their shots.

Due to the technology available today, stiffness between graphites and steels is almost a non-issue. You can find qualtiy (and expensive) graphite shafts that can play almost just as stiff as steel shafts. And again because of technology you can probably find quality graphite shafts that can be almost as consistent as steel shafts.

I've heard that Grafalloy is releasing Blue iron shafts. Blue wood shafts have very low torque (1.7 if I recall) and I would imagine the iron shafts to be similar. I hear great things about these Grafalloy Blue iron shafts.
