How was it speared WBL? I'm guessing from the snowy weather it wasn't spearfishing.

Special ice "shanty" with no floor. They drive 2 miles out on lake Winnebago and saw a big square hole in the ice and put the shanty over it. It has no windows because you can see into the (crystal clear) water better. He puts the head of the spear in the water when waiting for one because if you don't the splash usually scares them before the spear hits them. 15' of water there and 21" of ice. It's right next to his other shack near the river (as close as you dare get). There's some other "tricks" he uses (legal) but won't say what they are.

Sturgeon are only good smoked (like carp) as far as I know! The roe however makes some really good caviar if you like that stuff. See the link below. Spear pics are way at the bottom.

Sturgeon spearing is HUGE up nort.

Always wanted to try it, but haven't' been able to yet.

Great fish!!


FYI, State record Sturgeon is 170lbs 10oz. Breaking the 100lb mark is a very nice fish!

155lbs...apparently this has been a really good year for sturgeon spearing!

A 100 lb Sturgeon is around 25 years old. Actually not a good year. They cut the season short after 300+ were got because last year they got over 1000 in that time.

I was speaking more towards the quality of fish.

I guess I'm not really in tune with sturgeon spearing, but when there are 5 fish over 140 and 3 over 150lbs registered...that seems like a pretty good season.

I don't think the Sturgeon will win any fish beauty contests. I hope they taste alright.

If you smoke them they will. Like a 100 lb. carp. If you like caviar the roe is supposed to be really good.
