Well, it's pretty much official.

The tournament that I wait all year for is 99.9% dead. The city course that we play it on every year is maintained by Union members, who are on Strike.

The worst part is they're moaning over 1% when the city moved 3% already.

Friggin bastards. Unions, who needs them. This coming from a card carrying Union member, only because my position forces me into it....

It's weird about unions.

They came into being because private corporations clearly abused their employees. Unions were formed and the companies deserved what they got. Working conditions were so bad that people were killed and maimed on the job and the wages stunk.

Now, in many ways - the pendulum has swung in the other extreme direction. Unions often work against the best interest of their members, stretching wage and work requirements beyond what natural market supply and demand will tolerate. When this happens over an extended period - jobs are lost.

Sorry about the course...

One of my first jobs out of college was a lower management job for a hardware chain. All the sales staff was union so we weren't allowed to do anything. If a hammer fell on the floor we were suppose to call someone else to pick it up. Stupid.

If the union had actually been helping those people I would have understood but they didn't. The starting pay was minimum wage, just like every other store in town except they got to pay dues and do extra work. But hey, I got sit on my ass and do almost nothing so it wasn't all bad.

Ok first off let me say i am a UNION ironworker. Second let me say that i am NOT a union man. however in the case of construction unions they are still very much needed and they do what where intended to do. As far as say UAW or Teamsters they are what people think they are. Lazy, overpayed and overrated. On a bit of a side not of the 30 some odd members of the Indiana FEMA team 10 are union ironworkers.

My friend Josh's dad lost his job because he fixed something that was wrong with his little computer. LOST HIS JOB! For fixing his OWN COMPUTER! Geez... Unions are good in theory, but yeah.. there's too many people that just wanna see how far they can push it. Unions should help their members ride the waves, not make more.

Same here SilverUberXeno (well, almost....) I worked as a union laborer on bridge construction years ago. There was one time when a large I-beam needed to be cut and lifted into place by a crane....the union ironworker was nowhere to be found (no offense longiron) and it costs a fortune to have the crane sitting there so I finally said to he!! with it and picked up a cutting torch and went to work (yes, I knew what I was doing)...anyway, they threatened to fire me. When they told me who to vote for in the upcoming elections I told them to cram it and quit.

You need a Maggie Thatcher! Her hammering of the unions paved the way for the UK to improve its economic position over the following two decades.

Good Old Maggie and her handbag!

Didn't think you'd be a fan of Maggie Kilted ? .... she had her ways and she was made of steel - she pulled Britain up by the bootlaces but there was an awful lot of human turmoil she left in her wake ..
