Can nyone tell me how the impact position on a driver face influences the ball path, all other things such as swing path taken out of the equation?

My last range session had a high percentage of heel hits, and they were mostly fades.

One sweetspot hit was 20 yards longer than my "misses".

What will hits on the toe 1/3 of the face tend to do?

Misses out on the face are usually straighter in terms of ball flight than those off the heel. Heel shots are either pulls or bananas (power fades :D).

Try teeing the ball lower. (This isn't stemming directly from my feeling on regular tees, I promise). A lower tee ball promotes a more controlled and lower trajectory and eliminates ballooning on heel shots. Plus, it makes the guy on the end of the stick groove his swing a bit more rather than teeing that bastard up 4" off the ground and hacking away.

A controlled, smooth tempo'd swing will result in a better shot more often than not. And sometimes the simplest things can help you attain that.

Just my $0.02.

Try teeing the ball lower.

Usually I hit from the mats when I practice, because it's $1 cheaper. :) And I don't have to buy new tees. :D

The mats have the built-in plastic tee. It's not really high, but I'm not sure exactly what the optimum height would be. Do you think the range owner will get pissed if I pull out my pocket knife and start trimming it?

With a modern titanium driver, the sweet spot is set quite high in the face,so you tee the ball so half of it is above the topline of the club, this si the recommended tee height for most players (although I can't,I aways tee lower)

Out of the toe you will hit just as destructive a shot as out of the heel, just left instead of right, but because its lower it might not be so bad on the course.Might being the key word.
