I thought I’d start a thread where we can post about our latest struggles and hopefully improvements with our full swing. Let’s leave the short game to another thread.

What are you working on?

I’ll lead off.

I’ve been playing this infernal game since 2006. I’ve had a lot of golf coaches along the way.

I’ve started on a rebuild of my swing because too many bad things had crept in.

I was dismayed when he took a video of me the other day. Taking the club back on the inside, crowding the ball, not standing upright enough, too steep on the backswing, arms breaking at impact and more.

Result? Inconsistent junk.

So we’re rebuilding my swing. First aim is to get my hands out in front and high as I rotate (not low and inside). And with a flat swing drop it on the inside on the way through. There’s a few more things as well but that’s the outline.

Getting to the point, he’s a big fan of the impact bag. So in a back to the future moment, I’m back to training on an impact bag like I did when I started this game 12 years ago. Go figure!

I always have to work on getting through the ball. Many years ago, I had a very painful left knee. Was almost impossible to move through the ball and put weight on that knee. Became a habit/muscle memory... whatever. The knee was replaced in 2009. Still can easily fall back on downswing and the result is disastrous. Don't know why it's so difficult to move this big butt forward... but it is! The more I've been playing, the easier it seems to keep moving through. Let the mind relax a little and the old bad habit jumps up and bites me.

I'm working on just swinging my natural swing. I want to play completely natural and comfortable for the upcoming season. I fell into a bad habit of tinkering with my swing and it had an adverse effect. I want to swing easy with not much on my mind. This year will be the first year that distance isn't a priority. I jist want to comfortably make consistently good contact with the ball and see how far that takes me.

I do not have time to work on my game. I just go and play when I have the opportunity.
I think we sometimes overthink our swing mechanics. I know I have been guilty of this. My youngest son has a set of plastic golf clubs. I just told him to pick up the club and swing it. The first few tries he missed the ball or topped it. After several attempts, he was able to easily hit the ball. It actually got to the point it seemed easy for him. There was no instruction, just a task to hit the ball. His hand/eye coordination and motivation was all he needed. And I earnestly believe that's all we need as well. No one teaches a child to walk, we encourage them to do so. Same could be said of golf. Just hit the ball, you can do it. Trust the biomechanics.

This only works to a point. Everyone(generally speaking) learns to walk. Not everyone learns to be a sprinter, or a long distance runner, or a break dancer. Specialized skills and executing those skills at a high level take more than just what comes natural to most people. Many adults, given a golf club and 1000 balls, won't hit a solid shot in those thousand shots.

Example - I don't know of a single tour player that has never used a coach. Maybe there was at one time...but now, if you want to compete, you need to work on your swing.

Without instruction me and my friends, acquaintances, random playing partners have been able to hit good shots and I'm sure within our first 1000 swings. Also, I'm a weekend player. For someone who makes golf their profession is different. But instruction isn't necessary to play decent golf for a weekend golfer.

Bubba, Furyk and more.

I call BS on the media’s claim about Bubba never having had a lesson. Furyk’s swing is actually technically correct. After he waves the club around on the backswing, he drops it into the slot on the downswing. The latter being the important part of the swing. Ryan Moore is very similar to Furyk.
