The missing American girl in Aruba

I know you may not have seen this - but it has been on all the American TV networks.

A high school senior from my town is missing in Aruba. They have the FBI down there looking and have arrested several suspects. This was their annual Graduation Trip. 140 students with only 7 chaperones.

My town has 20,000 people and her house is less than a mile away. Her mother is a Speech Therapist and has taught my Laura.

Everybody has a yellow ribbon on their mailbox. Drive down the street and see dozens of them on both sides...

I fear the worst though...

We've been following that story and I'm afraid you're probably right to fear the worst.

Having a daugher close to her age, I can attest to the fear a parent feels when their kids go on trips like this. It's hard to imagine what this girls parents are feeling though.

Since you know them you can tell her that people all over the country have them in their prayers.

Ditto. My 16 year old is taking her second trip overseas this summer with People to People. Her first foray was at age 11. I was a wreck.

Small world, though, Bravo. I had no idea she was from your town.

If this is indelicate, I apologize, 'cause it's not meant to be, but what are the chances she just skipped? It seems like a possibility, since her ID and all of her things were left in the room. I mean, I don't ever go anywhere when I'm traveling without ID. I figured she would have had at least that on her if she'd gone out for a walk before leaving. Just a thought. The runaway bride comes to mind, as well.

Although I agree with both of you that it doesn't look good, maybe no news is good news.

Early reports of the confirmation of her death are coming in now...and as always is the case - there is much rumor and hearsay. In this instance, much of it is coming out of our community as all the kids have been back home now for almost two weeks...

I have heard that they were out at Carlos and Charlies bar and she got drunk and friends saw her with three natives of the area. Then, apparently she told her friends she was going to go with them on a beach walk. They begged her not to go but she went anyway.

Our high school senior class does this Graduation Trip every year. Two years ago, my niece was in the Bahamas after she graduated. She is in college now.

ALL of us parents are worried about this kind of stuff. Aruba ostensibly was chosen (among other factors) because of its "low crime rate".

Very sad...I am certain her funeral will be a big event.

Thanks for the notes guys.

Crazy horrible stuff. Especially when it strikes a small close knit community.Everyone is praying for good news but it does not look good according to present evidence.Aruba of all places! However, these things can happen anywhere and as you well know, they do. One chaperone for every 20 students is reasonable.Prayers for that girl are coming from all over the world.Mine too.
