Don't know why, but this seems an odd one to me. If it's legitimate, all credit to the guy...but it seems he's not sure himself...and no-one else saw it.

If he was unsure, should he have played on? What would you have done?

I think if he's genuinely not sure, he should have given himself the benefit of the doubt in this instance.

Any comments?

I give him a lot of credit for this. Even if he was uncertain it would have affected his play because he would have felt guilty about possibly cheating.

Man do I love golf. There's no other professional sport where this will ever happen.

You know, I think you're right. The guilt part is a huge factor - when marking my own scores it's why I never, ever scrimp on penalty strokes or stray from the rules, e.g. moving the ball without penalty when it's unplayable (yep, I know that caused controversy recently..!).

All credit to the fella. (But, and it's a sad reflection on me, there's a cynical part of me that wonders if he'd do this as an excuse to withdraw. I sure as hell hope not).

I was thinking the same thing when i saw it , Toms is a preaty stand up guy and i dont think he would do something like that. Good on him for doing it though. Dave i couldnt agree more. How many times have you seen B-ball players agrue a call and everyone in the world saw him do it. Golf is the greatest game in the world.

But why did it take him more than 12 hours to come forward? Why didn't he say something right after the putt?

No offense, cuz I think he's a stand up guy, but there might be more to this than we know. When I first heard this story, that's the first thing I thought....."Why did it take him that long?"

Good point Rock. Maybe it was the evil caddie on his shoulder telling him not to.

Agreed. I've played in tournaments where I think my competitor would have a par, so I ask if they had par and then I'm suprised when they tell me they ended up with 6 or 7. Golf is a very different sport.
Alex Rodriguez in the ALCS last year, clearly hitting the ball out of a glove and arguing is an example.
If Toms had the right intentions, which I think he did, then bravo to him.

Mightn't be too far from the truth there IG .. +4 on a day when Tiger is 10 shots clear of you .... yer missus has just presented you with a new baby 6 weeks previously......the review guys on the BBC were at the very least sceptical of Mr Tom's reasons

Didn't know all this, Dave. Kinda settles it for me, though...being the cynical type I'm plumping on the side of him just looking for an excuse - while at the same time trying to make himself look like a good guy.

Sincere apologies to him, of course, if I'm wrong. I'm sure he reads this forum!

And we thought we'd never agree on anything Kilted .... looks like we have the foundation to carry our relationship further .....:D

Yeah it's kinda on the lines of the T.Bjorn debate previously, where there's a right and a wrong way to do things - Mr. Tom's appears on the surface to be a standup guy - on the balance of things he took the right decision - he put his family ahead of a mediocre finish in The Open. He should've made that decision before tee off, and give some guy the opportunity to compete. Langer and Olazabal are prime examples.

Cheers

He actually, as I heard it, said he thought the ball moved after he got done with the round. It was also said the he should "think about it" to be sure. Similar to how bagger vance goes there on the last hole.

Fuzz brings up a good point. There may be a lot more going on then we know.
