when hitting balls in my garden if i feel i'm into a good grove i hit ball after ball after ball after ball - the feeling is that i'm trying to work what i'm doing right into my muscle memory, invariably in the end the wheels come and the confidence i had gained in this new 'tweak' to swing/stance etc has gone - can you hit too many balls ?

You can if you concentrate on one club.

Your best bet is to weave your way thru your set. Hit some wedges to to warm up, then grab a 5 iron. Then an 8 iron. Follow that up with your 3 iron.

You'll hit just as many balls, but not have that 7 iron burned into your brain. As much as each swing should be the same, they're not. You make adjustments for each iron because of length, lie, ect.

Give this a go, see if it works for you.

buy foam golf balls. They have them at every store from Walmart to Dick's Sporting Goods. You can buy 48 for 20$, or like 6 for 4$. With a driver they don't go far. Good way to practice swings without losing balls or breaking windows. Pretty accurate flight-wise, too.
