How come you never see any of the PGA golfers wearing shorts? I'm sure that each of us has played in shorts at one time or another and watching the LPGA Championship over the weekend (guess this is what you get with having both days Tivod and a lot of time to think gets you). Almost every LPGA golfer was wearing either shorts, a skort, or something of the variation.

Even watching the PGA tournament a few weeks back in Texas that Perry won, the temperature was around 99 or 100. Everyone seemed to be sweating buckets. But no shorts. Is it against the USGA rules? Against the PGA rules? Or just a fashion etiquette not to show off men's hairy legs?

I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure its against there dress code to wear shorts, I believe they are required to wear pants.

The PGA Tour's prohibition against players wearing shorts started when Jimmy Demaret wore a pair of very short shorts at the 1961 World Cup in Puerto Rico. When Jimmy stooped to line up putts, his shorts turned out to be very revealing.

    So says Jack Nicklaus.

Well, that settles it. No shorts.

The last thing I wanna see on the green is my competitors balls. :p

(That was the best joke ever.)

Yeah, it's against PGA Tour rules.

The second part of your question, I just may have to google or something if nobody knows it. I actually don't know if it's against the USGA's rules. Say for the US Open.

I KNOW you can wear shorts for the qualifiers for the US Open and the Amateur championships. In the US Amateur they wear shorts. With that being the case, I find it odd that they'd instill a rule saying "No shorts" for JUST the US Open.

    EDIT---

I hit up the USGA, and in fact, you can't wear shorts in the Open. Quote:

"The wearing of short pants is prohibited in the Championship proper, but is permissible in Local and Sectional Qualifying provided the host club does not have a dress code prohibiting such."

Guess if I ever get good enough to make the tour I should stock up on slacks and practice playing while drenched in sweat. =)
