Greetings. I'm wondering if anyone has ever had their swing videotaped and analyzed with motion analysis software. And if so, was it helpful/worth it? Thanks for any feedback.

I would recommend everyone have this done. When you see ypurself swing you will be shocked. All the things you think you are doing will look completely different on video.

I shudder to think what mine would look like.

It's very good to video tape yourself, as Obagain hit it right in the spot.
You don't need any motion analysis software if you know the fundamentals. For me, in ancient times, my head moved right and left in the swing, though I wasn't conscious of it. Now my head is centered which makes ballstriking more consistent.
Whereas, if you're a feel player, with a consistent feel swing, you don't need to videotape yourself.

I have never had myself video taped, but I had my wife take a bunch of pictures at different point in my swing and setup and I couldn't believe have different it looked than what it felt like...definatley some things that need to be changed.

I do this several times a year. I find it has helped a lot. If you already have a mini-dv camcorder you can just stream thru the PC and playback frame by frame. The software you can DL for free and all you need is a your camera and a firewire card.

I do this ALL the time, I go to an indoor training facility that's got a camera and launch monitor at every station. It's really fantastic and really helps when you can't figure out what you're doing wrong when you start having a really consistent error (ie you go play and suddenly develop a huge duckhook...throw up the video and it can be figured out in seconds).

Resurrecting old thread:

I have a VHS video tape camera, a tripod, a computer (obviously). Now I need someway to convert the NTSC signal from the VHS camera into something the computer can use, without buying a new DV camera.

Is there some kind of inexpensive box like a NTSC video to USB that I can just plug into a USB port on the computer?

yeah, you can get them cheap all over the place - the one I see most often is the Dazzle

also, many video cards have video input, most notably the ATI All in Wonder series

I videotaped my swing earlier this year, actually did it during a lesson. I showed up for the lesson carrying the camcorder, asked the instructor if he minded and he said no. He helped me choose a good angle, we started it and recorded the entire lesson. He was really good about it, even looking into the camera after two good shots to say "When you look at this later, the last two swings are the ones to use.

Converted it onto my computer later. I've changed my swing substantially since then and I want to tape it again (probably on the driving range), just to see if I'm doing what I think I'm doing.

Never used any swing analysis programs, though. I'd be interested to know how it worked for you if you follow up.

My video card is an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro ; no video input. :(

I'll look into the Dazzle or something similar. Thanks. :)

If you want a converter, be sure you get the usb2 version or the firewire, IF you have usb2 or firewire on your system. If you have USB, the conversion will be choppy because of the low bandwith.
Or, get yourself a digital camera which also take videos. All recent ones do it, and it's not expensive. You'll only need a usb to transfer the video file from the memory card, or just a card reader.

Only bad thing is unless you have a $500+ digital camera the video will be a VERY slow frame speed and small resolution. So it will still look quite choppy as it will only be about 15-30fps. Anyway I highly highly recommend getting this done! Ive had it done a few times and every time I go back and check things over Im surprised how much If degressed and my swing sucks again! Tiger has a full video studio at his house, he uses video analysis about every time he practices on the range. Tell him its over rated!
