Exactly.

Vijay isn't your prototypical PGA golfer. Ergo, he's hated for it. I personally love Vijay for his work ethic, family values and the fact that he's extremely respected by his peers.

Just because he misses the odd interview doesn't make him an axe murdered. However, you can always vent your frustrations by not buying Cleveland or purchasing any of his endorsers. Otherwise, you're just blowing hot air up your own skirt.

I hate Tiger Woods for what his brand of golf brings to the game. I don't hate the man, just the garbage that surrounds him.

I like him for his work ethic, but have seen what some people do their fans(at the couple of tournaments I've gone to) and he didn't do diddly squat at any I went to. Thusly, I don't like him for that.

I prefer a non-typical golfer.

I find it amazing how so many people can pass judgment on others without even meeting the person and basing their decisions soley on the print from journalists, who more often than not know minimal about golf, let alone the players.

First off, let me tell you about the "Cheating Incident".

in 1985 (after winning the Malaysian Open) during the Indonesian Open, he was in a threesome with Canadian pro Jim Rutledge and Ruswin Ali, an Indonesian amateur who was keeping Singh's score. The tournament director of the Indonesian Golf Association, Rudy Lisapaly, ruled that Singh improved his score by one stroke before signing his card and was therefore disqualified. Edmund Yong, the secretary general of what was then called the Southeast Asia Golf Federation, notified Singh that he was indefinitely suspended from the Asian tour....(The suspension lasted two years)

Vjay denied the charges of wrongdoing...but judgment was passed by Yong.

Incidentally, the SAGF was later dismantled due to problems of their own.....ironically it was Yong himself who went after Vijay, apologizing and asked him to come back and now refers to Vijay as a friend.

On a personal level, my previous company sponsored Vijay for about four years...he is extremely quiet, gentle and private....Once he knows you, he is about as warm and caring as any person you would want to meet.

As a closing note.....

Other golfers disqualified for handing incorrect scorecards?

Michelle Wie
Stephen Ames
Sergio Garcia
Mark O'Meara
Padraig Harrington
Berhard Langer
Gene Sarazen
Craig Stadler
Greg Norman
Curt Byrum
Jeff Sluman
Meg Mallon
Davis Love III
Lee Janzen

And both of this years Ryder Cup Captains...

Paul Azinger
Nick Faldo (twice)

Only difference between the people above and Vijay, was the harsh punishment dispensed by a corrupt organization.

LOL....

I know how it is...I was brought up to dislike the Yankees and Giants....;)
The thing is, public figures are not people, they are personas. It is easy to dismiss Vijay as aloof and unfriendly, because that's the image he projects. Certainly many public figures (athletes in particular) work hard to strike a balance between accessibility and privacy. As their paying audience we (rightly) tend to expect a certain level of accessibility, and when we don't get it, we complain. It has nothing to do with the person, it's the persona we become unhappy with.

There is shared responsibility here. Fans need to understand that there is distance between them, and the players need to understand that we judge them based on how they appear, not necessarily how they really are.

Jeff's just being very 19th century:

Thus.
Usage Note: Thusly was introduced in the 19th century as an alternative to thus in sentences such as Hold it thus or He put it thus. It appears to have first been used by humorists, who may have been echoing the speech of poorly educated people straining to sound stylish. The word has subsequently gained some currency in educated usage, but it is still often regarded as incorrect. A large majority of the Usage Panel found it unacceptable in an earlier survey. In formal writing thus can still be used as in the examples above; in other styles this way, like this, and other such expressions are more natural.

I'd never suggest that poorly educated part.

I think that people are forgetting the hissy fit he threw when Annika played in the PGA tournament. People have been saying he is an ass for years. Never have I once heard that he was a good person. A hard worker, yes. Does he deserve his wins, hell yes he earned them with the hours on the range. But not once have I heard an interview where the person said, "That Vjay is a nice guy." It is always that he is an ass. I don't think that every player should stay around and congratulate the winner of a tournament, I do however think that people need to remember where their paycheck comes from. Athletes forget all too often that it is the fans that pay their salaries or in the case of golf winnings, and with all that money we expect to be able to get a few questions answered. There were much more diplomatic ways that he could have handled the situation, such as going to the press tent and saying that he was tired and would therefore only answer a few questions, or any of a number of things he could have done. But he didn't and the reason is that he is an ass, and things like common courtesy do not come readily to asses.

If you haven't heard anybody that likes Vijay than you are not listening closely. From what I have read about hime, since I do not know him personally, is that while he can be chilly with the media he is well LIKED and RESPECTED by fellow tour pros and that he goes out of his way to help struggling tour pros with their swing etc.

Personally I think this got a little blown out of proportion. I don't care if Vijay sticks around, didn't care that Camillo won either except for the fact it takes a slight amount of drama out of the tour championship. If a guy is tired and doesn't want to talk, I know where he is coming from. Anybody here ever had a long day at work and when the phone rings at night you don't pick it up? I bet all of us have had those days.

Hissy fit? Did you see what he said about that? He, pretty calmly, I might add, said that if a woman wanted to play the PGA Tour, that they should earn their way on through some sort of qualifying. The hissy fit came from the media and fans reacting to his comment.

Exactly, Vijay took some heat for that but when you read what he said- it kinda makes sense. Just because he might sometimes go away from what the media wants to hear he gets blasted....oh well he can laugh all the way to the bank...

Ultimately Vijay, like all athletes, is being paid by us, the fans & consumers of the products which they endorse. Don't want to talk or give an interview? Tough, that's part of your job & one of the reasons you are being paid.

However, it won't make a difference at this point. People like sensationalism. We like loving people(Tiger) as much as hating people(Wie, for now, bad example).

Can't drop it to money, because becoming a bad guy at this point will make him more money. :biglol:
