Here is my rule...as long as the ball i lost was presumably still on the golf course grounds, technically i just donated it to another golfer, and thus it is a charitable donation and i should recieve due compensation...so i give my self a comp stroke + distance...meaning i hit one from where i think my ball should be and no penalty strokes :D

In that case you are playing golf not Golf. No big deal as long as you aren't posting scores or otherwise competing.

Oh, let's not even get into the rules. There's nothing he ever does that's more than a one stroke penalty. Just ask him. :prop:

I may hit them short, but at least they're in the fairway. :thumbs up:

LMAO - That used to be my wife's excuse. She hit it straight but her tee shots were 150 yds at best. After some lessons concentrated on club release she now hits it 200+ yds. Unfortunately (for her), now she has to work on the straight part. The increased contact speed has introduced some "issues" she's never had to deal with before. I now have the chance to give her back a little of the crap she's given me over the years for my drives 250 yds out and 50 yds into the trees. Yesterday I watched her duck hook 3 in a row into the trees on one hole - I didn't laugh at her though. At least not out loud.

Question for you & don't take it the wrong way. Do you follow every single USGA rule when playing a rd?

As you pointed out, unless it's a competition, who cares???? The point is to have fun, why beat yourself up over some of the archaic rules that I don't see a whole lot of people following.

How could I take it the wrong way? I've always felt that there are two games. Golf - a fun game that is played according to the rules of Golf and with a sense of honesty. Anything else is cheating. If you compete or turn in a score not played according to the rules - they really aren't archaic by the way - you are a cheat.

The other game is golf, a game that is played according to whatever rules you want. Also fun - but not Golf. Until you figure that out you'll never be a golfer.

I noticed in another thread that you posted about a score that you shot. How can you claim a score if it wasn't achieved by following the archaic rules? If you hit your tee shot into the woods, find a different ball, claim it as yours and play it and then say - hey! I shot whatever today? That ain't Golf WI-golfer.

While I play more golf than Golf, if I'm turning in a card for a handicap or playing in a competition (outside of my regular Saturday foursome where we all cheat) I play Golf.

The only scores I brag about are the ones where I follow the rules other then I won't ruin a club from a bad lie. I do however (usually when by myself) take a mulligan once in awhile when I need to build up some confidence after a disastrous round. Those scores are not mentioned in here.

In our league you're shots are being counted up by the other three in the group and any fudging would be brought up immediately. I'd rather take my lumps any day instead of being labeled a cheater.

But if you're alone and just out for some fun, no big deal. :)

WBL - I agree. except I don't think you have to be alone to play that way. I play in a Saturday foursome that plays mostly by the rules, but we have our own rules for some circumstances. Then again we quit turning in scorecards long ago.

Examples - the leaf rule. In the fall a ball lost in a pile of leaves in the fairway is NOT lost if we all agree that's where it is. Drop one and play on no penalty. On busy days we'll ignore stroke and distance. Hit a provisional after a wayward drive but sometimes you think you know where the ball is and when you get there - it ain't. No trudging back to the tee and catching crap from the foursome behind. Take 2 strokes and drop a ball. Our rule and not Golf. But that's OK we play for fun and on good days a little spare change from the other guys pocket.

I'm just pointing out that the "I shot 79 today" posts and the guy took two mulligans, picked up 3 gimme putts and foot wedged a ball away from a rock is cheating and not Golf. Not 79 either.

It seems as though if you are not willing to play though them or go when they wont be there you need to find a private course that you will not have the same issues. I have a 6 year old son that plays with me every Sunday late in the day. I play at least 2 durring the week and that is the only time I can ever seem to get him out there with me. If we dont take them out there they will never learn to appriciate this sport we all have so much passion for. My son has played some of the hardest courses in the midwest area and he can hold his own to almost any of the high school players in the area. Now I know my son is the exception not the rule but it is only becasue he has had a golf club in his hand since he was able to walk. We have spent many a summer nights till the sun went down chipping balls and working on all aspects of his game. Remember Lefty didnt get as good as he is without his dad teaching him everything he knew. If you dont like the kids out with their dads on a Sunday afternoon play your local country club and who knows maybe my son and I will run into you and he can give you a few pointers.

Umm, for your info this dad was letting his very young kids drive 2 carts, they were literally hitting the balls sideways across the fairway at each other, etc. He was the only one who might have been actually attempting to play. He was letting the 3 kids screw off. That is something I have an issue with.

Damn straight.

JMO on all this. I'm an 11cap so not a really good golfer but also not terrible. I try to play by the rules as much as possible. If I hit a tee shot that could be hard to find, I hit a provisional. This prevents the scenario of not being able to find the ball and then having to implement something illegal rather than returning to place last shot was hit, which is obviously not happening with a group behind. If the case does arise where I cannot find a ball, I take a drop where it went into that area and punch back out into the fairway. Drop is a stroke, 1st tee shot was a stroke, punch out is shot #3. Now I'm hitting 4th shot. It's obviously still not "right" but it's similar to where I'd be had I put the "3 off the tee" shot in the fairway.

I don't do "mulligans". I don't roll the ball into better lies. I'm not 100% clear on "unnatural ground" rules and I see most pros aren't either judging by the rulings I see on TV. If I'm off into the trees and an into embedded rock areas (common around here), I will move the ball and inch or 2 only to avoid having to purposely strike an expensive forged iron into a rock at 82mph.. That also depends on the situation. My 7i has a huge ding in it, I hit a ball out of a drainage ditch with it. In a situation like that I'll a) take the chance and possbily ding the iron or b) take my stroke and the unplayable lie.

For some of us Fathers out there we are more concerned with teaching the kids how to play. I agree with you that if the father was not working with the kids and they were just screwing off you should have found a Marshall and had them escorted off the course. I dont think that is the way to teach a kid to play. I have spent many hours working with my son and making sure he first respects the game. I dont think you are out of line wanting to enjoy your game, just make certain that if you are going to play a public course that you are ready to have some of the hassles that go with it.

I took a freind of mine with my son and I the other day and he wanted to bring his kid. I asked if he had ever been out and the answer was of course no. That raised some concern in my mind and at that point I took them to a local public course. If I would have taken them to the country club they would have thrown us out of there. That is my point if you are wanting to have a great game with no hassel join your local club. Otherwise dont complain about the "Public" playing at the public course.

A Marshal, at this course??????? Funny stuff there!! The pro shop closed up & now it's in the bar, half the time i'm lucky if there is anyone even in the building much less them ever hiring a marshal.

BTW, the few times I have actually seen marshals on courses, they never ever do anything.
