Wedges, Wedges, Wedges

I'm trying to improve my short game, and this always leads me back to wedges. I'm researching all kinds of options right now and demoing many different clubs.

I found a set of Callaway Forged Vintage wedges at RockBottomGolf.com for $170. It includes a 50*, 56* and a 60* wedge. I am partial to Callway clubs, and the reviews on these wedges seem favorable. The clubs are new and factory sealed.

Does this price seem good for these wedges?

That is a little high. Keep your eyes out on ebay and you can get them for about $60 each.

Oba--Is my math wrong? If the clubs are $60 each, then the three clubs in the set he's considering would be $180, right? So isn't $170 for all three pretty close to the mark?

I think I've said this before but..the wedges you have are some of the best you can buy. The Cally's won't make a bit of difference. I'm not being a d*ck here, I'm trying to save you money.

Here is why I am looking around. I'm having a very hard time digging up a Cleveland 900 FormForged 50* wedge in any finish. Cleveland has discontinued the 900 series (I spoke with them yesterday). I don't really want to get a mismatched 50* wedge. So I'm trying to explore cost effective options to get a good set of wedges inexpensively.

I haven't decided to do anything yet. I'm just looking around. When I bought the Clevelands I didn't really do any research. I saw them on sale for a good price, saw great reviews on them, and bought them.

If you have any suggestions for where I can look for the 900 series 50* wedge (online or retail), I would appreciate it very much. That is still the way I prefer to go...

This could be an option - 50 bucks... take it to your local clubmaker and have him bend it from 52* to 50*

Some guys don't like to bend wedges since it will affect the "bounce" of a club. With the gap wedge I think strengthening the loft actually works to your benefit, as you will be removing some of the bounce by doing this, and since this club will more than likely not be used from the sand, the lower the bounce the better for you.

FYI - my 51* Gap wedge was a 53* before I had it strengthened.

Thanks for the suggestion. Last night I won an auction for a 50* Cleveland 900 Chrome wedge. While it's not an RTG, it is still a 900 series wedge of 50*, so it should be suitable for what I want (the feel should be similar). $40 + shipping.

Golf Game Improvement Plan Update:

Step 1 - Short Game equipment needed - 50* wedge (completed)
Step 2 - learn to hit the wedges (a much tougher chore than Step 1)
Step 3 - knock 5-10 strokes off of game (a work in progress)

If you look at the pic of my clubs in the equipment gallery you'll notice that my gap wedge is chrome while the scoring wedges are RTG - what a small world huh?

BTW - 40$ is a nice pickup

Thanks! It does close the issue well.

At least the wedges I finished up with are similar in weight and sizing, so they should feel very similar (as you would well know). It is funny how that worked out very similar to your set.

Now to the Pelz Short Game Bible....
