What is it about the back (blue, champ., etc.) tees?

Seems like every week my group gets behind others that insist on playing the back tees even though a couple of them can't hit the ball out of their own shadow!! Aargh! Why do people do this?...It only serves to slow everything down. What's it like where you play?

I'm not sure that's the biggest problem. In my experience, back tees won't add that much time to a round in the grand scheme of things. I personally think that the ultra-hackers are also the ones who can not play within their skill levels. The 120 shooters on the back tees are also the ones who stand at 250 yards out and wait for the green to clear before hitting a fatted shot 20 feet EVERY TIME. They are the ones who hit driver dead right, retee and hit driver again-- dead right. They are the ones who choose their 160-occasioanlly club when they have a 158-to-carry water hazard. And, unfortunately, they are the ones who never even consider etiquette when they should be letting faster groups play through. The back-tees-hacker complex is a symptom of a bigger character(flaw?) on the course instead of a sickness in itself.

What's even worse is when the "hackers" finally notice you and decide to let you through. I usuallly hit my worst shot of the day then. Something like a screaming push that goes straight towards where they were trying to get out of the way.

BD...it's funny that you mentioned the 250 to the green and fatting it thing.

It's funny because, when you get to the level of golfer that I am (19 handi, good distance, etc), any given shot is a toss up between perfect and chunky monkeys. Inevitably, the latter occurs whenever I've waited for a green to clear before hitting in and have people waiting behind me. They're rarely impressed.

However, if I don't wait and just hit, I nearly kill people. It's a frustrating position to be in!

I usually wait for the green to clear when I'm 250 out. Not because I will most times make the shot, but because I do have the ability to and have done so on more than one occasion in the past. And it's not even about hitting the green. It's pretty easy to pull or push a shot to either side of the green and still hit someone.

If I make someone behind me wait so that I don't hurt a player in front of me then that's fine with me. But that's usually not the case anyway. I play fast (probably too fast) and I can't remember the last time I personally held up a group behind me. Besides, if I want to take my low percentage long range shot once or twice a round, I paid for the privelege to do so.

But hackers playing from the back? It's actually something I rarely see on the courses that I play. And not to be racist or anything like that, but the majority of the times that I have seen incapable players hitting from the black tees, they've been Asian guys. It's a cultural thing. And because that is the case with Asian men, it doesn't bother me all that much.

Well, I paid $40 for this round of golf, and I want to use every last inch of the course! Including all of the ponds, rough, sand, and trees. :)

My playing partner and I use the white tees, even though both of us qualify for the gold senior tees. I suppose that makes us almost as bad as the blue tee hackers.

If I ever get my driver properly trained, I may hit a blue tee or two, too! A blue tutu?

I know what you mean about your worst shot.I had a four ball in front the other day and was really starting to hit some good shots.
So they called me through as they did i heard one guy say (watch his swing) oh shit now they expect me to hit a good drive.
Yep big snap hook straight in the crap.

If I'm playing somewhere new, I ALWAYS want to play the back tees. The course designer designs the course from there and the back tees dictate how the course "should" be played.

I just never want to play a course I haven't played, and play it from the up tees. If I shoot a great initial score, say 75, it'll be totally tainted because I didn't "play the course". On some courses, it's an entirely different world from back there. I just don't want to compare my score with someone else's and have the old trump card, "Yeah, but you played the ladie's tees." In most cases, I'd feel better about myself playing a course for the first time, shooting 85 from the tips than 72 from the blues or whites.

I do agree that your high, say over 20, handicappers don't have any business being back there. Sadly though, they'd probably shoot the same score from the ladies tees. If you are over a 20, distance isn't your biggest problem. Which is less immasculating? Shooting 105 from the blacks or 92 from the reds? Let the guys go back there and have their fun. At least they'll feel like men.

It goes back to my trademarked theory of golf. Golfers should have to become scratch from the ladies tees before moving back to the whites. Then scratch from there to move back to the blues. Scratch from there to the blacks.

If everyone was FORCED to do this, imagine how fast your rounds on the weekend would be? ALL the bad folks that just can't play would be playing the red tees. It really doesn't take all that long to shoot a 7 on a 280 yard par 4. On a 400 yard par 4, there is a lot more walking and decision making.

Nobody would feel immasculated because EVERYONE would be on the up tees. You would have a special card you would show the starter to prove you are scratch from the reds and can now play the whites.

But I digress.....

It is true that if they look, talk, or act like an Asian, they are on the back tees. :)

You know... I'm appauled at all of the racial biggotry going on here. Seriously!

Just because the tees are "black", they are bad?

I played the tips last night. Sure changes the layout of the course.

My approach is to play every tee shot like a fairway iron, no tee, on par 3's. On par 5's, it's still at least 2 to get there. And for the longer par 4's, hammering it into the trees isn't going to help your cause.

We've all hit those shots before, so why would the added distance make such a huge difference?

It's all mindset. Well, for the most part. :)

This thread just reminded me of something ... we had Captain's Qualifiers last Sunday - off the champ tees (6,999 yards), it's open to all male members. The cut was made at 78 nett.

Timesheet for Captain's Day was drawn up yesterday - it was an open draw so I didn't know the 3 guys that I was paired with - hadda quick look in the handicap book and I'm playing with a 24, 22 & 15 handicapper. I stalled a little longer and went thru about 6 of the timslots, 80% of them were above 15 handicap. So going back to the original post - it may not be quite a black (tee) and white (tee) issue regarding who can/can't play off the back sticks.

"tim slots"???

Davie-boy, in this age of decommissioning and love for all, separating tims from the prods is unacceptable!
